Let’s look at a few characteristics of this amazing giant. At up to 300,000 pounds and 100 feet long, whales are, as far as we know, the largest creatures ever created, larger than any known dinosaur. Some of them have tongues as large as an elephant and hearts that weigh over a ton. Whale lung tissues can tolerate levels of compression that would rip ours apart. They also have bigger lungs, compared to the rest of their body, than we do. So even after they're compressed, they still have oxygen-holding capacity. Whales' sinuses and inner ear structures are protected deep inside thick bones that resist pressure.Comments[0] |
