Last time we introduced the beginnings of the process by which the dogma of evolutionism entered into, and, finally, saturated our public school curriculum. Irrespective of the outcome of the famous, though often inaccurately reported, Scopes trial of 1929, evolutionism continued to be generally quite controversial and not widely taught in public schools. Those class texts text books that did discuss it nevertheless often omitted it from their indices. But, as mentioned last time, after the National Science Foundation Act was promulgated in 1950, the National Science Foundation was formed, and this group was able to fund what was known as the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study in the late 1950's...jack

In the last couple of days we’ve looked at the only two mechanisms available to evolutionists to validate their theory, and have been presented with the tiny testimony of the fruit fly.

But even if you could demonstrate beneficial mutation, how do you then explain integrated functions and systems in a creature.

For example, neo-Darwinists believe that subsequent generations of giraffes mutated beneficially to have longer and longer necks. But it takes a very powerful heart to pump blood up to the full-grown giraffe’s brain, 18 feet in the air. A thirsty giraffe must lower that head way down to drink water. While the head is down, that powerful heart, now some eight feet above the head, with one mighty pump, will burst its brain’s blood vessels. So the giraffe needs special arterial valves that can close and regulate blood flow to the brain while it drinks. But now the giraffe sees a lion, raises its head and starts running.

With its head raised the giraffe won’t get blood in time and so will quickly black out. Fortunately, the giraffe also has a unique, sponge-like tissue just beneath its brain that gently absorbs blood to prevent capillary damage while the head is down, and then gently contracts and squeezes this blood into its brain while the head raises, preventing the giraffe from fainting until blood from the nearest re-opened valve reaches the brain.

The giraffe needs all of these characteristics at once.

An example often given of a beneficial mutation is sickle cell anemia. The logical problem is that, even though a short term advantage is given to some of its victims because those having the disease have resistance to malaria, yet the species is not improved by this disease. Fact is, the disease elongates and makes fragile its victim’s red blood cells, clogs blood vessels and damages tissue. Untreated,….. it is inevitably fatal. In the short term some may avoid malaria, but genetically the human race is imperiled.

So, simply put, evolutionists must, for each complex, living organism, and for each complex system within each organism, come up with scenarios to explain how, gradually, one incremental mutation at a time, such complex systems and beings could come to be. At the same time, each system component must be working on its own. We’ll examine a couple examples over the next few days.

It’s probably a good idea to understand a phrase popularized within the Christian community by Behe and others: Irreducible complexity. To better understand the importance of irreducible complexity, we must first recall the basic tenets of the theory of Darwinian Evolution. There are only two mechanisms that are believed to make evolution possible.

The first mechanism is natural selection, sometimes referred to as the survival of the fittest. Most of us, creationist or evolutionist, don’t have a problem with this concept. Natural selection doesn’t belong to, neither was it first expressed by, an evolutionist. But, as the Dutch botanist Hugo DeVries wrote in his book Their Origin By Mutation, “Natural selection may explain the survival of the fittest, but not the arrival of the fittest.? In other words, natural selection can’t create any thing new, but can only eliminate what is already created.

The words of Jesus, in answer to His disciples’ question about the details of His return, are recorded by Luke, Chapter 17. In that night, Jesus said, two shall be sleeping in bed, one shall be taken and the other left.

Surely a nearby scientist or philosopher listening to Jesus would see no problem with His statement, for Jesus said He would be returning at night and that two would be sleeping in bed. .But the rest of Jesus’ answer may seem confusing, for He goes on to say that two women will be grinding, and two men will be working in the field, one taken and the other left.

Grinding meal was traditionally done in the morning, and no one worked in the field at night. But Jesus also said He would be coming at night.True enough, it will be night, somewhere, perhaps in Israel, when he returns, .but it will also be dawn, dusk, morning and afternoon elsewhere in the world.

The support actually provided by science for and against religious belief is very much exaggerated in today’s culture. The reason for this is understandable. Science, when operating within its own arena, has been quite successful.

For example, in a typical environmental laboratory like mine there is a wide variety of scientific experiments, if you will, occurring every single day. Such a lab has a number of instruments, standards, equipment, tools, glassware, and personnel...

Due to war, natural disaster, food availability, etc., calculating population growth is an imprecise business. But we do know that the estimated population increase between 1700 and 1800, .4%, predated the great advances made in medicine associated with increased rate growth that would occur in late 19th and 20th century. Last time we used calculations to verify the accuracy of Genesis as it describes those 70 Semites that became a nation of an estimated three million within 430 years. Now, using this premedical rate of .4%, we can use population calculations to test another Biblical event, Noah’s worldwide flood.

Let’s say you read in the Bible that a little clan of 70 Semites, who in about 1850 BC came down from Palestine, led by Jacob, through Beersheba to Egypt to live near Jacob’s son Joseph, and that this small group of 70 Semites, within just 430 years, grew to a population of some three million. Can we believe it?

Recently we’ve been looking at just a few of the hundreds of Apostolic Fathers whose writings have been discovered. We’ve looked at Clement of Rome, Ignatiius, Polycarp, Justin Martyr, Marcus Felix and Irenaeus. Now, some critics of our times, professing to be Biblical scholars, have presented, as a result of their analyses, that Christ Himself, as well as the apostles and writers of the New Testament, are really the products of a “Christ myth”, a fabrication, folk-lore that has developed over some period of time into what we call today New Testament Christianity.

But knowing what we now know, one will find it difficult to disagree with the conclusion by the eminent Rylands University scholar, F.F. Bruce, stating near the end of his book “Some writers may toy with the fancy of a Christ-myth, but they do not do so on the ground of historical evidence. The historicity of Christ is as axiomatic for an unbiased historian as that of Julius Caesar. It is not the historians who propagate the “Christ-myth theories.”

We’ve doing some literary time travel together through the written works of Christian brothers and martyrs from the first and early second centuries. These, who have been since dubbed “Apostolic Fathers”, were some of those that knew one or more of the last living Apostles of our Lord, or knew some of those that knew them. We’ve looked briefly at Clement of Rome, Ignatius, Polycarp, Justin Martyr and Marcus Felix. As you may suspect, there are many more to available to study, but for now we’ll take a one minute look at just one more, Irenaeus.

Living from the mid-150’s AD through to the early 200’s, Irenaeus provided us with two great works from that era, Against the Heresies and Demonstration of the Apostolic Preaching.

As we catch a glimpse of first and early second century writings and memoirs of devout Christian writers, we should not leave out Polycarp. Ignatius was, it seems, somewhat of a mentor to Polycarp, and both Ignatius and Polycarp disciples of John.

John’s influence on Polycarp is evident in his letter to the Philippian church, quoting 1st John 4:3, for example, stating, “For every one who shall not confess that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is antichrist”. And Polycarp also borrows heavily from 1st and 2nd Timothy, when he wrote “I exhort you all therefore to be obedient to the word of righteousness and to practice all endurance, which you saw with your own eyes in Ignatius, Zosimus, Rufus, in others also who came from among yourselves, as well as in Paul and the rest of the Apostles; being persuaded that all these ran not in vain but in faith and righteousness, and that they are in their due place in the presence of the Lord, with whom also they suffered. For they loved not the present world, but Him that died for our sakes and was raised by God for us.”

In this series so far we’ve boarded our time machine and briefly visited the first and second century church through the recorded lives of Clement, Ignatius and Justin Martyr. Let’s now look at some memoirs that have been found of a Christian lawyer, Marcus Felix, written sometime after Justin Martyr’s death, in polished, elegant Latin style.

The story, entitled Octavius, begins with a description of a leisurely journey taken by three reunited friends, Octavius, Caecilius and Marcus Felix, as they walk on the sands and great rocks along the ancient port of Rome, the seaside resort of Ostia. During their morning walk on the Mediterranean beach, a debate was brewing.

As most of us are aware, John was the last of the Apostles to die, according to such reliable records as those of Clement, who was alive during and beyond John’s life and death, and Irenaeus, who we’ll talk about later. Both clarify that John lived into the reign of the Roman Emperor Trajan, who reigned from 98 through 117 AD. About 25 years after John’s death, a young philosopher named Justin began a spiritual journey of his own. One day, while taking his routine walk through a field overlooking the
Mediterranean, he noticed he was being followed by an old man. Wanting his privacy for daily meditation, Justin became annoyed as the old man approached and then presented him with a series of troubling questions, challenging his philosophies. As Justin later recalled “When the old man had spoken these and many other things, he left, encouraging me to think about what he had said. I’ve never seen him since, but immediately a flame was kindled in my soul. I was overwhelmed by a love for the prophets and the friends of Christ.

As afore-mentioned, the writings and records of hundreds of great Christian living in the first centuries of the Church have now been found. So far we’ve briefly looked at the life of Clement of Rome, very likely the third pastor, or bishop of Rome after the apostles, Linus, mentioned by Paul in II Timothy 4:21, being the first. Next we’ll look at Ignatius, also called Theophorus. He was, according to Eusebius, the second bishop of Antioch after Peter. A bold and fearless martyr for his Christian testimony,  Theophorus, Latin for “the God Hearer”, when asked by Emporer Trajan, “And who is Theophorus?” answered, “He who has Christ in his heart”.

Last time we began to embark on a journey through time, introducing some of those champions of faith, using Eusebius, the third century historian, as well as other viable sources. The power, reliability and accuracy of God's Word is preserved and presented to us by the mosaic comprised of their lives and deaths. Eusebius, as one source, living between 263 and 339 AD, has often been dubbed the Father of Ecclesiastical History. This great historian enthusiastically dedicated his life and energy to documenting the first 300 years of Church history. When reading his summary, History of the Church, it quickly becomes clear that his theme is :  the working of God"s providence through the apostolic succession.

In these critical times some Christians, and non-Christians, young and old, are stumbled, hampered by disinformation, false facts, presented by critics of the Scripture. Poorly qualified and far-from-center Bible scholars are courted by the media, themselves ignorant and out-of-date, delivering to the public their dismal reports. These critics’ “proofs” that the Scriptures are inaccurate and largely non-historical, are little more than thinly disguised exposition of popular liberal thinking, characterized by vague suppositions, poor Biblical scholarship and ignorance of contextual, scriptural meanings.

Sometimes, when I’m feeling like I’m having a rough time, I’ll crack open and read a chapter out of Foxe’s Book of Martyrs.

While reading this historical account of persecutions all the way back to Nero’s in AD 67, one can’t help but be amazed at the grace of God, and the courage of these lovers of God, these martyrs for Christ. And John Foxe knew the scriptures, Old Testament and New, clearly understanding grace, forgiveness, communion, and the Son-ship and the deity of Christ. John Foxe, who lived from 1516 to 1587, recorded the persecutions and martyrdoms of notable Christians, from Coomans, Hues and others in 1568, Ridley and Latimer in 1555, Calvin, Huss, Bunyan, Tyndale, Luther and Wickliffe, to the early 1300’s, and thence back to the Apostles themselves. When you read the writings of ancient, devout followers of Christ, you are peering into their spiritual insights, personal prayer lives, opinions about entertainment, clothing, work, and every other aspect of daily life.

In the last couple of days we've been looking at similarities among cultures and noting that most entertain myths and beliefs similar in many ways to a primordal paradise, a Garden of Eden.

Among the most intriguing ancient traditions to me is that reported of the Miautso tribes, who at one time occupied most of inland China south of the Yangtze River. These tribes have been gradually driven into the mountains of the southwest by the better-armed and better-organized Chinese.

As explained by the translator, Edgar Truax, "The Miao traditions are very precise, as compared with those of many primitive peoples, because they are not only handed down in metrical form, but, also, they are in couplets, in which the same or similar meaning is expressed in different wording, so that the second sentence acts as a definition of the first, where it might otherwise not be clear. This is very much like one form of Hebrew poetry.

We've been recently exploring the idea that there is, in our past, a cultural memory of a paradise, where there was no death, disease or pain.

Alene Oestreicher, in a 1989 ICR Impact article, compares Genesis 2 with the Greek beliefs from the 8th century B.C. She quotes Hesiod; "At first the immortals who dwell on

Olympus created a golden race of mortal men, and they lived like gods, carefree in their hearts, shielded from pain and misery. Helpless old age did not exist, and with limbs of unsagging vigor they enjoyed the delights of feasts, out of evil's reach.”

The idea that there is in our past a cultural memory of a paradise, where there was no death, disease or pain, is not hard to prove.

There was such tradition already in Greek culture centuries before ancient Homer penned the Iliad. The even more ancient Sumerians’ Eden traditions speak of a time when there was no sin and where animals lived together in harmony; when man was in harmony with deity and never died. The ancient Chinese Kwang-tze in 400 BC presented, among many other Eden-like ideas, that a woman’s desire for knowledge brought forth the end of this paradise. Even the ancient language of the Chinese, with symbols reaching back through the ages of a 4500 year, unbroken civilization, is deeply rooted in a primordial paradise.

The Maitzu, ancient people in the mountains of Southwest China, have a verbal, amazingly Genesis-like tradition of Creation, of a catastrophic flood, a Tower of Babel, and a geneology that reaches all the way back to Seth, Adam’s son, and the ancestors of the Native American tribe near the Grand Canyon today refer to a world wide flood as the Canyon’s cause.

Much research in recent years has eliminated a number of candidates previously used to “prove” evolution. It is a fact that many of these false facts are still found in very recent grammar, high school and college science and other textbooks. Therefore, though we’ve discussed these in past programs, some such discussions bear repeating.

The first that comes to mind is the theory that the evolution of humans is demonstrated within the developing human embryo. According to some, if you look at the various stages of development of the human embryo during a women’s pregnancy, you can see the various stages of human evolution. The main arguments for embryonic recapitulation are the supposed "gill slits" (left over from fish), "yolk sac" (left over from the reptile stage), and "tail" (from the monkeys) in the human embryo. But even informed evolutionists have now abandoned this theory. The gill slits, so called, are never slits, nor do they ever function in respiration. They are actually four pairs of pouches: the first pair becomes germ-fighting organs; the second, the middle ear canals; the third and fourth pairs become the parathyroid and thymus glands. The yolk sac does not store food because the mother's body provides this to the embryo. In fact, the "yolk sac’s true function is to produce the first blood cells. The "tail" is no tail, but just the tip of the spine extending beyond the muscles of the embryo. The end of this will eventually become the coccyx, instrumental in the ability to stand and sit as humans do.

Before that we mentioned the Bombardier Beetle, the woodpecker and birds in general, and the octopus. Careful analyses of the sperm whale reveals a specialized, designed creature, with literally tons of features that must all be in place at once for its survival. Large lungs, special oxygen storage ability in their blood, extraordinary heart, extra circulatory control for pressure equalization, discontinuous sinus cavities, specialized lung tissue, reinforced inner ears, continuous backbone to the tail, are just a few examples, and all provide a dramatic, large scale demonstration to the observer that the whale is irreducibly complex...jack

If any of you philosophers are searching for a successful marriage between philosophy and theology, let me recommend a book that, in my opinion, every Christian today should study: Mere Christianity, by CS Lewis. The book’s introduction and development is purely philosophical and demonstrates how argumentation itself, and the common perceptions of what is right and wrong, provide us with a clue to the meaning of the universe.

We spoke last time about Charles Sanders Peirce, father of pragmatism, and his published piece… "A Neglected Argument for the Reality of God." Therein we noted Peirce’s citation of nature’s endless variety and our ability to observe it in the universe presents the reality of God as the very bedrock of logical truth.

The same argument was reiterated by Paul in Romans: “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse? (KJV, Romans 1:20). Pierce’s "Neglected Argument" stands as a challenge to any living philosopher or scientist who would like to do away with the need for God. What must be explained is the miraculous comprehensibility of the world of experience.

How many of you high school and college students can find in your textbooks, shown as proof of evolution, series of pictures or photos of advancing stages of human and other mammals as they develop before birth?

Darwin said that embryological evidence was "second to none in importance." The idea that higher life forms go through the previous evolutionary chain before birth was popularized by Ernst Haeckel in 1866. It was later found that Haeckel forged the diagrams which he used as evidence for this theory.

For your consideration:

Remember those textbook pictures of an ancient bird, with a mouthful of teeth, strange, arm-like, hooked wings, perched on a high branch, able only to glide to the next branch? It has been asserted that this bird, called the Archaeopteryx, shares 21 characteristics with dinosaurs. Research on various anatomical features of Archaeopteryx in the last ten years or so, however, has shown, in every case, that the characteristic in question is bird-like, not reptile-like.

Sitting outside my house on a dark evening, I can see the Northern Hemisphere’s most recognizable constellation, Ursa Major; the Big Dipper. If I point with my finger at the handle of the Dipper, and follow an arc created from the handle, I meet a very bright star, Bootes, and, continuing along that arc, I reach the next bright star, Virgo’s signature star, Spica.

In Psalm 19, David proclaims that the Heavens declare, are telling the glory of God and the work of His hands, and that their testimony, incessant day after day and night after night, inaudibly utters articulate speech and shows, a universal language, speaking to all the world.

In the context of the Psalm we also see a contrasting but connected structure, speaking first of the heavens, and second of the scriptures. Psalm 19 is not just describing the mere wonder of the heavens, but is also telling us that the heavens contain a revelation from God.

We’ve been talking about a body of evidence for the reliability of the New Testament that is found outside of the New Testament documents themselves: extra-Biblical evidence; that of what we call the Apostolic Fathers, church leaders that lived during, or right after the original apostles died. Thousands of quotes from these, all martyrs for Christ, have now been uncovered and translated.

Here are some more examples.

Anyone questioning the authorship and authenticity of the New Testament documents is really about 50 years out-of-date. There exists today a total of over 25,000 copies of the New Testament, written throughout the world and throughout the ages.

But another interesting body of proof lies outside of the New Testament itself… that of what we call the Apostolic Fathers. The term “Apostolic Fathers? refers to church leaders that lived during, or right after the original apostles. Many of these knew and were disciples of the Apostles.

The quotations are so numerous and widespread that, if no manuscripts of the New Testament were extant, the New Testament could be reproduced from the writings of the early Fathers alone.

Geisler, 1986

Indeed, so extensive are these citations that, if all other sources for our knowledge of the text of the New Testament were destroyed, they would be sufficient alone for the reconstruction of practically the entire New Testament.

Prerequisite to any informed discussion of evolution is a review of the mechanisms of evolution. We must first recall the basic tenets of the theory of Darwinian Evolution. Understanding these is not as difficult as one may think. There are only two mechanisms that are believed to make evolution possible. The first mechanism is natural selection, sometimes referred to as the survival of the fittest. Most of us, creationist or evolutionist, don’t have a problem with this concept. Natural selection doesn’t belong to, neither was it first expressed by, an evolutionist, but was presented by Creationists like Linnaeus and Cuvier...jack

And X rays have been used to increase the mutation rate in the fruit fly by 15,000 percent. Yet, even with this speedup of mutations, scientists have not been able to come up with anything other than another fruit fly...jack

In our ongoing enlisting of some good examples of creatures that defy evolutionary theory by their very existence, we last presented a brief overview of the beaver, chicken egg and the Monarch butterfly.

Continuing from our last discussion, I would like to briefly describe another research experience related to this particular interest, passion, or whatever it may be called; that is: the study of the reliability of Scripture. In McDowell’s book, New Evidences, a one-line reference to the unpublished works of someone called “Dean Bergen”, that contains 86,489 New Testament quotes by early church fathers, now resident at the British Library, intrigued me.

I got an opportunity to look for this work at the British Library in London. I found no Dean Bergen. But I did eventually find John William Bergen, Dean of Chichester. He was a 19th century, multi-lingual scholar and a prolific writer. But I didn’t find these unpublished works until I thought to look in the manuscripts room. One has to be interviewed and cleared to do this, and so I went through the process, received my license, and went upstairs to the manuscripts area. There I was able to review these hand-written volumes, categorized by the names of ancient Christian writers.

A number of years ago I was on a personal retreat and picked up and read a sixteenth century book by John Foxe entitled “Foxe’s Book of Martyrs”. The title explains its content, a documentation of Christian Martyrs from the Book of Acts through to close to his own death in 1587. I found it interesting, moving, and it seemed well researched. I noticed the mention of some people living in the early centuries AD that I was not familiar with. But they were mentioned by Foxe without introduction, as if the reader was expected to know who they were. I was curious and no more. About two weeks previous to this retreat a friend had asked me to review and give an opinion about a book by James Kennedy called “Why I Believe”, and recalled that I had seen some of those names mentioned in Kennedy’s book.  Well, I had also taken that book with me to my personal retreat.

Last time I began presenting some testimonies by experts and researchers in various fields, all of which demonstrate that, no matter from what perspective you come, the Scriptures shine.

As mentioned previously, if you are looking for accuracy in Scripture, you will not be disappointed. Jack Cuozzo, an orthodontist, choosing to believe the Biblical account of mankind’s origins rather than that of materialists, was able to shed light on the Neanderthal controversy by x-ray photographing original fossil skulls. His conclusions are exciting, though no surprise to the Bible-believer. His account “Buried Alive” reads more like a James Bond diary than any dry research paper.

Dr. Steve Austin, geologist, said of himself that he used to be somewhat confused about the processes that formed the geologic structures of the earth. But after his research into blow holes and Spirit Lake following the eruptions of Mt. St. Helens, he was able to unlock mysteries previously unknown about Noah’s flood and catastrophism in general.

For some time now our discussion has been about research, the motivations, tools, and resources. Today I would like to put some ”flesh on the bone”, if you will, giving some personal examples. In Proverbs we are told that  “A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of he that has it; which ever way it is turned it prospers”. That verse from the 17th Chapter of Proverbs reminds me of the Holy Scriptures. Indeed, no matter from what perspective or discipline you come, the Scriptures shine.

And if you are looking for accuracy in Scripture, you will not be let down. For instance, Dr.’s Ethyl Nelson and Dr. Kang analyzed ancient Chinese symbols and characters and, as they hoped, the Chinese language has, nested deep within its meanings, distinct echoes of Genesis in frequency that surpasses any possibility for coincidence. In their co-written book, “Discovery of Genesis”, they demonstrate the fact that the 4500 year old language is replete with direct reference to Biblical events.

Regarding philosophy, to me, anything by CS Lewis and Mere Christianity by the same is central. The Soul of Science, by Pearcy and Thaxton does an excellent job of dividing between philosophy and science, and Bert Thompson’s The History of Evolutionary Thought is a good reference. With respect to Geology or Meteorology, anything by Henry or John Morris, anything by Steve Austin, anything by Andrew Snelling, anything by Kurt Wise, or Larry Vaardiman.

Research has been introduced in this series by defining the word, and investigating its Biblical motivations and implications. The Bible, the only authority, and some contextual assistance was then identified as key, written research tools. Approved commentaries and study guides, used to assist to assure correct contextual understanding and application, are beneath scripture but have also been mentioned.

The second most valuable historical, scientific and philosophic sources are those resulting from the research and testimonies of experts known to adhere to the precepts described earlier. Having previously introduced the importance and motives for research, we are now able to talk practically about some tools that have been valuable for research. Obviously, the most valuable text is the Bible, God’s very Word and revelation. Any person keeping, or defending it must know it. The very worst Creationists doctrines and ideas, for example, that I have seen, stem from persons or ideas not well grounded in Scripture. To some, it seems, the science or discipline they are using apologetically is more relevant and accurate than the Scripture itself. Hence, such “defenders of the faith” tend to adjust contextual meaning in Scripture in order to fit their point, and can do more damage than good. Any scientific or historical statement that is in direct conflict with known, contextual Scripture is to be held suspect. The truth will always come to light in the long run.

The knowledge of the truth, by the process laid out in II Peter 1, is promised to cause us to be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. This sublime research is not merely the process of connecting the dots by study and academic endeavor, but is a well traveled road driven by the operation of God to infuse the precepts of His Word into the very fabric of our lives, resulting finally in the conversion of our entire being to emanate the stature of Jesus Christ.

Next, we are told, it becomes our task, as members of Christ’s body, to help facilitate the reconciliation of others to the same. We need to, as Jesus said to Nicodemus in John 3, speak that which we do know. Being, as Paul described in I Timothy 4, good ministers of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, saving ourselves and those that hear us. We should give ourselves to reading, exhortation and doctrine.

As such, it is contextually clear that we are ourselves to avoid, and to help others avoid psuedo-science, and other pointless philosophy; not by running from them, but by refuting them, as clearly stated by Paul in I Timothy 6:20 when advising Timothy to “keep”, or guard, that which is committed to him.

Research is defined in Webster’s New World Dictionary as the “careful, systematic, patient study and investigation in some field of knowledge, undertaken to discover or establish facts or principals”. To research is also presented in the same definition as “to travel through, to survey”. Indeed, to undertake research can be an exciting and useful endeavor, a journey. And the resulting discovery, even when about subjects already well known, is at least very personal.

Of course, some kinds of research are more important than others. Solomon’s second and third Proverbs talk a little about research. In these chapters he uses the parody of hidden treasure to exemplify what our attitude should be towards the research for wisdom...

When discussing as we recently have the relationships between mass, gravity, black holes, the time it takes for light to travel from the stars to us,  Dr. Russel Humphreys, an awarded-winning physicist, comes to our attention. Dr. Humphreys has been working to bring cosmogeny, the study of the origin of the cosmos, up to date, by applying relativity and thus showing that the universe not infinite, but with a boundary and a center. When taking this view, we come to a startling realization that relativity calculations, according to all we know today, comes up with an entirely different scenario than that of the Big Bang theory; a Biblical scenario. Dr. Humphreys published a ground-breaking book on the subject entitled “Starlight and Time”, where he openly discusses and demonstrates his calculations, and presents a cosmogeny that parallels the Genesis account. According to those calculations, at the time when Earth, which would be close to the center of mass of the universe during the fourth day of the Creation Week, was in its fourth day, billions of years would have occurred in the areas of the universe located adequately away from its center.

We’ve been lightly examining the materialistic idea that eternal matter somehow, billions of years in the past, developed an instability in it and thus suddenly expanded, producing the stars, the elements, all the planets, including Earth, and us, all within an infinite universe. This idea of a sudden beginning of time and space is called the Big Bang theory. But years before Hubble’s discoveries Albert Einstein was presenting some theories about light, mass, time, velocity and gravity that would revolutionize our understanding of their inter-relationships. From his General Theory of Relativity, presented in 1915, we now can compute the effect of mass on time. According to General Relativity, if a person is located close to an extremely dense mass, like, say, a black hole, time would be greatly slowed. A black hole is a theoretical, but mathematically believable phenomenon. These days the Hubble telescope has, in the opinion of many cosmologists, located some of these black holes.

We’ve spoken before about the fact that, as we look up at the night sky, we are often seeing stars and galaxies that can be 100’s, 1000’s, millions and even billions of light years away. But, if that is true, one should ask, how could the Biblical account limiting the Earth’s age to 1000’s, or even 100’s of 1000’s of years also be true? If light, which travels over six trillion miles in a year, reaches our eyes, say, a billion years after it left a newly created star, doesn’t that mean that the universe is at least a billion years old? Well, the answer seems to be “yes” and “no”, and before you get the idea I’m giving you double-talk, I’ll explain what I mean. But I must first begin with a little recent history. Before Hubble’s discoveries, it was seriously debated whether or not the galaxies in space observed were in fact merely part of the Milky Way. Up through the first ¼ of the twentieth century, no one really had a grasp of the immense size of the universe. But Edwin Hubble was to devise the classification system for galaxies, grouping them by sizes and shapes, that astronomers still use today. He also was able to provide confirmation that the universe is expanding. In 1929 he determined that the more distant a galaxy is from Earth, the faster it appears to move away, which became known as Hubble's Law. Hubble’s law was to be the foundation of the Big Bang theory.

Continuing a listing of references I can personally recommend for research in specific areas: regarding the stars and heavens, astrophysics, I depend on research and publications by Humphreys, Buamgardiner, Danny Faulkner, John Oller, Don DeYoung, and I am very edified by Bullinger’s Witness of the Stars.

Those that themselves acknowledge the authority of Scripture above their own knowledge and experience, who put God’s Word above their own resume, who themselves are intense students of the Bible; and who have a loving concern for the lost or confused.
