Last time we were looking at the inevitable and very natural observations that all things tend to decay, become disordered over time, and that this law is unbreakable, and, according to Scripture, purposeful, subjecting us all and the very universe itself to seeing our emptiness and presenting us with the very real hope for redemption. And the Scripture even tells us how this natural or spontaneous tendency towards disorder and death came to be. Genesis, the book of beginnings, reveals to us an event that occurred just after the creation of the earth, the heavens, and all life. It occurred as the result of another creation; free will. Although they received warning from God that the wages for the sin of disobedience was death, Adam and Eve nevertheless chose to disobey. Hence, according to Scripture, God’s good creation was hurled into a downward spiral, an inevitable death.

In the minds of some that hold to an evolutionary explanation as to how natural things have come into being, evolution, ever-increasing order and complexity, seems to be quite natural. But, in the sciences today a term is often used to describe the natural way of things, that is: the way they happen in nature when nature is left to itself. The term is “spontaneous”. All around us in nature we notice events occurring spontaneously, or naturally, and we have come to expect them to play out in certain ways. When lightning hits the side of a mountain during a thunderstorm, causing a fire, we expect that the fire will destroy vegetation, not create it. When a river swells during the rainy season, we expect increased erosion of river banks, and possible damage to any structure in the flood plain. We don’t expect new houses to be formed by the onrushing flood. When a volcano explodes we expect death, destruction and disorder, not life, construction and order. The second we dig some metal ore out of the ground and melt it, form it, bend and shape it into some metal object, like a car, it begins trying to return to the ore state it was in originally. We have our junk yards and landfills to testify to that fact.

In continuing to contast the hopefulness provided for the person who has trusted in and relied upon the promises of Scripture, with the hopeless and dark doctrines of the materialist, the thoughtful Christian can only wonder how the purposefulness and design of our world and universe could be missed. Last time we enlisted some of the incredible intentional attributes that stare us in the face, each item of that list absolutely necessary for life on Earth, regarding the obvious design of the Sun, Moon and planets.

Our atmosphere’s design should also not be forgotten, with just the right proportions and combination and properties of gases. Oxygen, for example, is in supply at about 21%, enough to keep us all breathing, and yet not so much as to reach the approximate 25% concentration where all would combust, which also has the special characteristics that it can be present in the upper atmosphere in single, paired or triple-atomed molecules, just the right size to absorb harmful Solar radiation. We should all have some idea about the Earth’s revolution, defining the length of the day, just the right speed relative to its distance from the Sun to warm but not overheat the surface, and the Earth’s tilt, perfect to provide the necessary seasons and weather patterns.

When enlisting some of the characteristic doctrines of materialism, one sees a hopeless, meaningless universe, purposeless lives, and inevitable future of hopelessness and chaos. This dark scenario is rarely verbalized in the classroom or media today, perhaps because few materialists have really looked towards, or desire to dwell on, the logical conclusion of their beliefs.

Oddly enough, often the same person who holds such a mind-set, whether expressed or no, also harbors a contradicting optimism; a feeling that, somehow, everything is going to turn out all right. Often progressive, he or she thinks that, as we continue to advance, we gain the understanding more and more each day that we are enlightened with perspective, and in full control of our destinies, as the philosopher-futurist, Jeremy Rifkin once put it, …we are now the kingdom, the power and the glory, forever, amen. Carl Sagan also expressed this philosophy, and then presented it as science’s stamp of approval when he said that the universe is all there ever was, is or ever will be.

But the Christian is armed with the explanation of the ages. Of course the cosmos surrounding the Earth is hostile to life, for the surrounding universe is not designed to directly sustain life, but has other, inter-related purposes. The Christian wonders at the kind of blindness that could allow one to look at the huge number of fortuitous facts about our world, solar system and cosmos that make life possible, and yet not see overall design and purpose.

To conclude our observations regarding prophecy in Scripture that allude to end times judgement, as seen in, for example, Job and Revelation, we noted a recent though dwarfish example of upcoming events by looking at Mt. St. Helens. As afore-mentioned, such well-documented events as Mt. St. Helens eruptions help unlock mysteries about future, predicted events , as well as the past. But such catastrophic events as were seen during the 1980 Mt. St. Helens eruption are nothing in comparison to those described in Revelation ear-marking the very end of the world.

Therein, for example, a burning mountain, reminiscent of an asteroid, and a great star, perhaps a comet, is predicted to hit the sea and earth. Hail burns up huge areas of the earth’s vegetation. Much of the earth’s water supply is poisoned. Something happens to our Sun to actually reduce its luminosity, followed later by a Solar blast, perhaps a monstrous flare, that scorches the earth.

Last time we were looking at an interesting scripture found in the ancient book of Job, as God Himself releases a string of mysteries to Job, demonstrating the inadequacies of Mankind to instruct, or even fully understand, God’s purposes. Therein He rhetorically states to Job, recorded in in verse 23, “Have you entered into the treasures of the snow, or have you seen the treasures of the hail, which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?”

For reasons previosly mentioned and many more, water and its characteristics are truly amazing, and obviously specially designed to help maintain life on Earth. It was also previously mentioned that, despite the fact that water is so important to us, we still don't have a really good molecular-level understanding of it. When water is a liquid, the molecules mix around very closely to one another, each attracted to the other by hydrogen bonds. As water cools, the molecules slow down and pack into a crystalline structure, ice. But a very unique property of water is that, because of its arrangement of hydrogen and oxygen atoms, the ice is uniquely less dense than its liquid state. Hence, as water freezes it expands, and so, it floats. As we know, this particular characteristic of water is crucial to the very existence of life on Earth.

Perhaps because of such factors as its antediluvian, or pre-flood knowledge of the water and earth sciences, and a number of other attributes, I personally find the book of Job particularly interesting.

In concluding our discussions regarding what we can learn from the fossil record, it has been necessary to enlist many of the claims that can not be factually supported by the fossil record. The bottom line is that, with over 250,000 fossils on display and no transitional fossils that are beyond debate, the creationist presents the fossil record as that which is an embarrassment to the evolutionary theory as presented by neo-Darwinists, and that there are no transitional forms from one-celled creatures to the most complex mammals, via any biological pathways that we know of: not from one-celled to invertebrates, not from invertebrates to the vertebrate fishes, not from fishes to amphibians, not from amphibians to reptiles, not from reptiles to birds, not from reptiles to mammals. All of these are distinct, all of them unique, all of them specially designed.

We have been encapsulating the past discussions regarding proported fossil evidence for an evolutionary history and the lack of real evidence in support of these claims. We left off last time with the Coelacanth, dubbed before living Coelacanths were discovered in the 1930s as the dinofish, a cross between amphibians and fishes. Well, we now know, as you might expect, that the Coelacanth is 100% fish. The skeptic would explain this embarrassing upset as the result of an accidental discovery of a creature previously thought to have been extinct. After all, a cynic might observe, it’s easy to claim all kinds of “fishibian” traits when there is no living creature available to disprove your evolutionary conjectures. So much for the supposed missing link between fishes and amphibians.

Recently we’ve been talking a lot about what is generally known about fossils…the different ways they can be formed…what conditions are present, where they tend to be found, and how widely differently they can be interpreted. We also investigated, based on information presently available to us all, the plausibility of the theory that one-celled animals could transform into multi-celled invertebrates, that invertebrates could transform into vertebrates, that vertebrate fishes could evolve into amphibians, that amphibians could change into reptiles, or that reptiles could evolve into birds and mammals. And so this theory, called evolution, first states that the one-celled organisms of the primordial world evolved into the vast array of complex multi-celled invertebrates, creatures without internal skeletons, during what is dubbed as the Cambrian period. This evolutionary phenomenon is called the Cambrian explosion, and we have cited the fact that the mechanisms that could have caused this event in history are unexplained and very much in doubt.

We have been looking a bit closer at evolutionary claims, dominating our media and educational system, boldly and categorically present to the public, including our kids, that the fossils support their theories. On the contrary, however, a focused inspection on any given evidence finds that evidence contrived. It must be a requirement that serious, unbroken transitional fossil evidence must be found in order to support such outlandish presumption that millions of favorable mutations, occurring simultaneously and/or in perfect order, have conspired to produce the incredible variety of living things found in nature. As afore-mentioned, imagined scenarios bolstered by scanty, easily challenged evidence such as the "walking whale" fossil reported in 1993, or the highly publicized intermediate between fish and amphibians, the Coelacanth, are used as proof of transition, until ultimately unproven.

Various similarities and differences found in fossil fishes and amphibians in limb structure, head attachment, elbow and knee joints, skull patterns and internal gills, are used to support the idea of transitional forms, attempting to obscure the line between the two classes. As we brought to light last time, however, the fact that there are very distinct skeletal differences between amphibians and fishes presents us with only one of the many problems encountered in trying to link fishes and amphibians. The internal organs...gills, ears, eyes, pelvic girdle, etc., are quite different also, and major changes would have had to occur in just the right order to accomplish the transition. But. alas, no "fishibian" has ever been found. Every fish, living or fossil, even those with unusual characteristics, is fully fish, and every amphibian, living or fossil, is fully amphibian.”

Perhaps you’ve looked at a lungfish on some TV documentary and imagined you were seeing some evolutionary transitional creature linking fishes to amphibians. Despite the fact that many are taught that lungfish evolved into land creatures, few evolutionists consider any form of lungfish to have been the forerunner of amphibians, mainly because of skeletal differences, for the lungfish has no hint of legs. Only museum visitors and TV documentary watchers still carry this misconception. But the evolutionist must explain variation seen in nature by the spontaneous development of increasing order from class to class, species to species, and so, for example, from fishes to amphibians. So let’s look at the supposed transition from fishes to amphibians. Amphibians are often defined as cold-blooded animals characterized by moist, smooth skin that live both on land and in water at various life stages, and that have gills at some stage of development. So frogs, toads and salamanders are amphibians. According to the general view held by today’s evolutionist, it was a transition from fins to feet that took place in the water, not any movement from water to land, that marked the transition from fish to amphibian.

We were discussing some of the reasons why many evolutionists believe there is a genetic link between ancient reptile and mammals, believing that an intermediate group evolved from the 'true' reptiles, which gradually acquired mammalian characters until a point was reached where we have artificially drawn a line between reptiles and mammals. Creationist biologists and paleontologists remind us, however, that the creatures included within the class Mammalia are a diverse group. The mammals comprise 32 orders, most of which are placental mammals but which also include the Monotremata, which embrace the egg-laying spiny ant-eater and the egg-laying duckbilled platypus, and the Marsupialia, which include the opossums and the pouched marsupials, such as the kangaroo and wallabies.

In a 2003 copyrighted Impact article Dr. Duane Gish states the following. “It is interesting to note that while claiming that intermediate forms for the reptile-to-mammal transition have been found, some evolutionists admit that no immediate ancestors for any of the 32 mammalian orders have been discovered. Thus, George Gaylord Simpson, after stating that nowhere in the world is there any trace of a fossil that would close the considerable gap between Hyracotherium ("Eohippus"), which evolutionists assume was the first horse, and its supposed ancestral order Condylarthra, goes on to say "This is true of all the thirty-two orders of mammals…The earliest and most primitive known members of every order already have the basic ordinal characters, and in no case is an approximately continuous sequence from one order to another known. In most cases the break is so sharp and the gap so large that the origin of the order is speculative and much disputed." Here Dr. Gish is citing Simpson’s book entitled Tempo and Mode in Evolution, New York: Columbia University Press, 1944.

As mentioned previously, the evolutionist sees through the lens of materialism and gradualism to explain variation by the development of increased order, from single-celled to multicelled, invertibrates to vertibrates, from primitive jawless fish to sharks, skates, and rays, from primitive jawless fish to bony fish, from primitive bony fish to amphibians, transitions among amphibians, from amphibians to amniotes (first reptiles), some transitions among reptiles, and from synapsid (having a skull with an extra low opening behind the eyes) reptiles to mammals, and from diapsid (two holes on each side of their skulls) reptiles to birds. Let’s briefly discuss the supposed transition from reptiles to mammals.

Evolutionists begin the discussion by citing the differences between “early” reptiles and modern mammals. Distinctions in skull, braincase attachment, palate and dentition. These particular reptiles had teeth all of the same type, whereas the modern mammal has molars, canines, etc. These reptiles had teeth that were replaced continuously, unlike the mammal, and had a single ear bone, or stapes, whereas the mammal has three ear bones; the stapes, incus and malleus.

Even though we are often literally bombarded with the notion held by some evolutionists that vertebrates, those creatures with their skeletons inside, somehow evolved from invertebrates, those creatures with all their soft parts held together by an outside skeleton, it seems that the evidence is all in favor of the creationist view. Even though this transition is supposed to have taken 100 million years, not a single intermediate has ever been discovered. If vertebrates themselves have not evolved, as seems certain, evolutionary theory is dead, and it is unnecessary to further speculate about evolution of groups within the vertebrates, or within any other division. By the way, there is to date no clue as to how the one-celled organisms could have evolved into the vast array of complex multi-celled invertebrates during what is dubbed as the Cambrian period.

The theory of evolution, states within its doctrine that vertebrates evolved from more primitive invertebrates. The term “vertebrate” describes an creature that has an endoskeleton, that is; an internal, skeletal frame, upon which its systems of muscles, nerves, circulation, etc., are mounted. The five classes of these are the cold-blooded fish, amphibians and reptiles, and the warm-blooded birds and mammals. An invertebrate is an organism whose body is held together by an external skeleton. Examples of these are insects, sponges, worms, arthropods, mollusks, and even tiny one-celled animals, or protozoa. Now, the average evolutionist believes that the time between the origin of life and the abrupt appearance in the fossil record of the many complex invertebrates was nearly three billion years, and about 100 million years for one of these invertebrates to evolve into the vertebrates, or fishes.

We have been looking at the testimony of fossils in general and the theory proposed by evolutionists in particular that birds have through the ages somehow evolved from reptiles. Their case in point, the Archaeopteryx. It has been asserted for example, that Archaeopteryx shares 21 specialized characters with coelurosaurian dinosaurs. Recent research on various anatomical features of Archaeopteryx, however, has shown, in every case, that the characteristic in question is bird-like, not reptile-like. K.N. Whetstone, in the 1983 Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology revealed that when the cranium of the London specimen was removed from the limestone and studied, it was shown to be bird-like, not reptile-like.  M.J. Benton published in a 1983 article in Nature that "details of the brain case and associated bones at the back of the skull seem to suggest that Archaeopteryx is not the ancestral bird, but an offshoot from the early avian stem."

As stated earlier, Creationists assert that there is no correlation in fossils found in sediments and increasing complexities and that all of the "kinds” of animals are distinct within each kind. After looking carefully at the data, creationists have concluded that there are no transitional forms from invertebrates to vertebrates, from fish to amphibians, from amphibians to reptiles, from reptiles to mammals, or from reptiles to birds. So let's talk now about the  supposed transition from reptiles to birds.

The study of the forms of life existing in the fossils of plants and animals is called paleontology. This discipline differs from that of archaeology, which is the study of man's past by scientific analysis of the material remains of his cultures. The two studies, however, often intersect. When studying paleontology, it is also often necessary to draw from geology, and most particularly, sedimentary geology.

Evolutionists who also study paleontology or sedimentary geology sometimes put forth arguments against the world-wide flood spoken of in Scripture being the source of most of the fossils we find.

However, in the opinion many creationists, such arguments demonstrate a potential misunderstanding of the forces of nature that bear upon such a world-wide, cataclysmic event. Re-thinking of sedimentation is beginning as some geologists take a more detailed look at the multi-layering phenomena observed, say, at Mount St. Helens, Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, in finely separated rock strata, hard-rock erosion from mud-flow, multi-level sedimentation and tree re-planting, coalification, etc. The effects of these processes on the radiometric attributes of underlying strata, (for example trapped Argon concentrations in igneous rocks) are also coming to light via focused, scientific studies.

We continue today by introducing the testimony of the fossils as we take a closer look at the various types that have been found. Thus we begin to accumulate what we could call a fossil record. How this record is interpreted is largely subjective, depending on one’s point of view as to how the plants and animals they represent came to be. What that record tells the unbiased observer may be surprising. In addition to the replaced and permineralized fossil types described earlier, sometimes soft tissues of plants or animals are carbonized, or rapidly buried and compressed. Frozen mammoth carcasses found in ice or insects trapped in amber are examples of preservation fossils, whereby an organism is preserved with very little chemical or physical change. Most of us have seen clams or other invertebrate shells that have been recrystallized. In other words, the aragonite crystal structure of the shell has been changed to mineral calcite rock.

Its startling how such widely diverging statements are made from two different camps using the same data. But such is certainly the case when interpreting the data provided by fossils. So let’s talk about fossils for awhile. Fossils are remains or traces of once-living organisms. When something dies, it is usually eaten by something else; a predator or bacteria, and is soon gone. So, in order for fossils to form, there must be a way to preserve the remains of animals or plants for a time. This occurs most often on the bottom of bodies of water; oceans, lakes, rivers. When an animal or plant dies in or falls into the water, the remains are sometimes covered up quickly by sediments; mud, peat, or something like that, and the sediment forms a protective covering.

When attempting to focus on what is the “real rub?, the actual disagreement, between evolutionists and creationists, we find that the debate reduces to the question of origins. Unable to come up with plausible scenarios or explanations as to how the complexities of the cosmos could have accidentally come to be, the evolutionist/materialist establishment seems to be forced to resort to dogma and propaganda, attempting to restrict all inquiry about origins to evolutionary alone, exaggerating evidences for their theories, and ridiculing and misrepresenting the creationist views. Evolutionists use the false argument that, if we accept God as the Creator of nature, we will simply resort to the creative act, instead of searching for the scientific explanations. History, of course, does not support this argument.

We have been exploring the differences between creationists and evolutionists, noting that there really are very few with respect to what we call “science?. The real rub is not what we see in nature, but how it got here. The debate is about origins. The creationist claims that the scenario that is presented by materialists is not credible. The spontaneous, that is, the natural and unguided origin of DNA, for example, can not, to date, be explained by anyone. Fact is, as afore-mentioned, the DNA in the mind-boggling, complex, living cell is, itself, constructed using proteins. But the code within the DNA is what produces those same proteins. You must have the DNA because it’s the only part of the cell that can reproduce the information to pass on to the next generation of cells.

Whenever evolution – creation discussions come up you may take notice what are the actual issues being debated. If you compare, for example, a book about biology written by an evolutionist with that written by a creationist you will notice that 99% or better of the content of the two books is in agreement. They will both present the same details about DNA structure and replication, and the other mind-twisting complexities of the cell. Evolutionists and Creationists have no disputes regarding the complex coding and code-reading processes, and such things are fairly commonly known among those who study them.

We’ve been reviewing the amazing process of the development of a Monarch Butterfly, one of nature’s most beautiful creatures, literally transformed from the lowly caterpillar. But just as remarkable is the Monarch’s migration habits.

The monarch butterfly can fly thousands of miles to its wintering locations, and some tagged monarchs have been known to travel from Canada to the Neovolcanic Mountains of Mexico, a distance of 3000 miles and a two-month trip. Each Autumn, thousands of Monarch Butterflies gather in southern Canada to migrate south, just to winter in Mexico, Cuba, Pacific Grove, and Newark, California. This wintering period allows them to hibernate, thus conserving their energy. During this interval they eat and drink little, thus enabling some of them to live as long as one year. You can see them flying around and almost blocking the sky, and you will hear the fascinating sound of their wings flapping. During their long flight there is a great danger from predators. The monarch butterflies are the only insects on Earth to migrate annually over continental distances, and it is estimated that over 300 million of these fantastic creatures migrate to Mexico every year.

We were looking last time at a wonderful analogy to the resurrection, the metamorphosis of the Monarch Butterfly. We came up to the stage last time where the little two inch Monarch caterpillar is looking for a safe place to undergo its transformation, weaves a small silk lump, attaches its tail end to the lump, and then hangs upside down in the shape of a "J". About 12 hours pass, and it begins to move, forcing the skin to split open. It wriggles for up to five hours to shed its skin for the fifth and last time. The chrysalis, at this point, is jade green, with about 24 metallic appearing gold spots surrounding half of its upper abdomen. There are 12 metallic-like gold spots on the remaining parts of the chrysalis, all of which are necessary for the normal development of the butterfly.

When looking at creatures whose design, habits and/or migrations are unexplainable without the consideration of a careful and wise Creator, we should not leave out the Monarch Butterfly. Even though Monarch Butterflies are small creatures, they do phenomenal things. First, they develop from tiny eggs, to a caterpillar, become chrysalis, and finally transform into beautiful butterflies. They migrate, traveling great distances to winter in temperate climates. Amazingly, no one butterfly makes the entire round-trip journey. During winter the butterflies do not reproduce, but in spring return to summer homes, breeding along the way. And yet somehow their offspring know to return to the starting point. Female butterflies begin the cycle when one small, pin head sized, white egg is laid underneath the leaf of a milkweed plant - a plant that is poisonous to most creatures.

When resuming our listing of the scientific accomplishments and discoveries of the period of Mendal and Darwin, we take up 1848 when Helmholtz articulated the Conservation of Energy, and an absolute scale of temperatures was proposed by William Thompson. The field of stereochemisty began as Louis Pasteur separated two forms of tartaric acid. The speed of light was measured by physicist Fizeau, a four-valve steam engine was patented by Corliss, and the anthrax bacteria was discovered by Pollender. Clausius articulated the Second Law of Thermodynamics and Foultault demonstrated that the Earth rotates using a pendulum, suspended from the ceiling of a church. William Thomson proposed "absolute zero" at which the energy of molecules is zero. In 1852 Helmholtz measured the speed of nerve impulses in frogs and mathematician Riemann showed that a variety of non-Euclidean geometries are possible. A mercury pump was developed by Geissler to produce vacuum tubes. Pasteur described how fermentation is caused by microorganisms. Clausius explained his theory of heat. Then, in 1858, as the first transatlantic cable began operating, the concept of chemical "bonds" was introduced by Couper. Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species was published in 1859, and the first internal combustion engine was developed by Jean Lenoir.

The period between Gregor Mendal’s birth in 1822 and Darwin’s Origin of Species in 1859, 37 years later, was a scientifically eventful one. The year that, in Heinzendorf, Austria, Johann Mendel was born, Fourier defined sines and cosines, and Champollion first translated hieroglyphics. Shortly thereafter Silicon was isolated by chemist Berzelius, Botanist Robert Brown discovered "Brownian motion" and the cell nucleus, and the world's population topped 1,000,000,000. Principles of Geology by Charles Lyell was published, Henry demonstrated the electromagnetic telegraph, Faraday described the laws of "electrolysis", and the term "scientist" was coined by the philosopher William Whewell. Then Louis Braille invented a system of writing and printing for the blind, Gustave Coriolis described the "Coriolis effect", and Elements of Botany, by the naturalist Asa Gray, was published. While in Paris the Arc de Triomphe was completed and the garrison at the Alamo was defeated in 1836, a map of the moon's surface was produced by the astronomers Beer and von Madler. Edward Robinson recorded his “Biblical Researches? when he located Megiddo, Jezreel, Anathoth, Bethel, Shiloh, among many other Biblical sites,

We were discussing, and perhaps some of us were marveling, at the amazing, irreducibly complex, special features of the whale.

It should be mentioned, however, that evolutionists believe that the great whales evolved from land animals. A typical article on the subject found in the National Geographic magazine, the ancestry time line of whales is many millions of years old and includes, in order, the Pakicetus, Ambulocetus, Rodhocetus, Procetus, Kutchicetus, Durodon, Basilosaurus, Aeticetus, Squalodon, Cetotherium, and Kentridon.

But these outlandish claims, using imaginative artistry, play out, when looked at closely, to be nothing short of a major sales campaign. Speculation without fact, combined with slick pictures and artists’ conceptions, are used to sell the idea that whales once walked the Earth.

Last time we introduced the high pressure habitat of the whale. Let’s look at a few characteristics of this amazing giant. At up to 300,000 pounds and 100 feet long, whales are, as far as we know, the largest creatures ever created, larger than any known dinosaur. Some of them have tongues as large as an elephant and hearts that weigh over a ton. Whale lung tissues can tolerate levels of compression that would rip ours apart. They also have bigger lungs, compared to the rest of their body, than we do. So even after they're compressed, they still have oxygen-holding capacity. Whales' sinuses and inner ear structures are protected deep inside thick bones that resist pressure.

There you are, looking down at the water from the diving board. Ten feet deep at the drain. In you go, and, as you swim downward against your own buoyancy, you manage to approach the bottom of the pool. As you touch the drain, you notice the pressure. You feel it most distinctly in your ears and sinuses. You briefly touch the pool bottom and its time to head back up for air and normal pressure. Even though the entire trip took only five to ten seconds, it seemed much longer.

The deeper you dive, the greater the pressure. Since water is, say 62.3 pounds per cubic foot, it exerts about 4.4 lbs/square inch on your body while ten feet under water. Seawater is denser than fresh water, but the calculations are the same. And this is in addition to atmospheric pressure of that ocean of air above us, about 14.7 lbs/square inch at sea level.

We spoke last time of different types of ancient writings, and how they very much differ from Holy Scripture. And we’ve also delved a bit into some of the writings of the Apostolic Fathers. As opposed to psuedepigrapha, their writings are believed by many Biblical scholars to be, next to the Bible, the most valuable documents of Christianity. Though one can’t help noticing the cultural differences, the reader of these documents nevertheless comes away feeling a real sense of reassurance that the early Christians believed the same things modern Christians do. These early Christians do not fit perfectly into any of today’s denominational categories, whether Catholic, Protestant, Charismatic, evangelical, etc. Some of these were fiery writers, sobered by the persecutions of their day. Nearly all of them were martyrs. Some of their statements may challenge us, offend us, and we may disagree with them.

Sometimes it can be very confusing when talking about Biblically-related ancient writings when we hear such terms as papyrus, manuscripts, Canon, apocrypha, apostolic fathers, Syriac, Coptic, Latin Vulgate, pseud’epigrapha, etc. And we find these days yet another surge of claims that Christianity was developed from myth, and so some utilize some apocrypha and pseudepigrapha to support oppositions of New Testament authorship. The term apocrypha comes from the Greek word a pok’ ru phos, meaning hidden, or, concealed.

First described by James Watson and Francis Crick in 1953, DNA is the famous molecule of genetics that establishes each organism's physical characteristics. In mid-2001 the Human Genome Project finally presented the true nature and complexity of the digital code inherent in DNA. We now understand that there are perhaps 35,000 or so genes in each human DNA molecule, comprised of approximately 3 billion chemical bases arranged in precise sequence. DNA is that popular, double-stranded molecule, twisted into a helix like a spiral staircase. Each strand is comprised of a sugar-phosphate backbone and numerous base chemicals attached in pairs. These stairs act as the "letters" in the genetic alphabet, combining into complex sequences to form the words, sentences and paragraphs that act as instructions to guide the formation and functioning of the host cell. Through recent technologies like x-ray crystallography, we now know that the cell is not a "blob of protoplasm", but rather a microscopic marvel that is more complex than the space shuttle.

We mentioned last time present scientific inquiry concludes that the physical laws governing the universe are a great, master code. And yet, antithetically, evolutionists believe the universe to be of random and chaotic origin. They are, however, believing in a logical impossibility, because we know that this master code scientists notice is at the back of all the observations in nature, is, by definition, the very opposite of randomness. Think about it...when a spy writes a message to his conspirator in secret code, it is in a form to intentionally look random. But any code can be broken, because, in order to have meaning, every code, no matter how disguised, must have a pattern, and therefore can be decoded. A thoroughly random or chaotic string of messages is non-decodable, because it has no meaning. And, very much unlike the real universe in which we all find ourselves, a meaningless universe has no order, and is not discernable, not recognizable.

If we are honest with ourselves we all have to agree with CS Lewis’ claim in his book “Mere Christianity?, that there exists a common moral code, inside information, that is known to all and unvarying throughout all ages and cultures, that no has ever fully kept that code, and that there is Someone behind that law, an Encoder, to whom we all must answer. The fact that there is a great Encoder has not escaped the notice of all fields of science and philosophy. For example, scientists have long abandoned the idea of any pulsating, eternal, cyclical universe.

The woodpecker has a specialized tongue in a tough beak with a sharp point; a shock absorbing tissue behind the bill; a tough, double reinforced skull; a stiff tail for bracing itself; strong leg muscles to hold on; and special four-clawed feet to give added support. The woodpecker can hammer at a tree with a force of over 1000 Gs; 300 times greater than the effect that pushes our astronauts on lift off.

Last time we were citing some extra-Biblical sources, sources outside the Bible, that were used or referred to by Biblical authors, such as Jude, Moses and Paul. We ended by mentioning that the careful use of extra-Biblical support for Scripture is allowed, but some basic, perhaps obvious rules should be followed. First, it must assist and support scripture. As Jesus said, not one implied punctuation mark in scripture can be broken, until all is fulfilled. Cited, outside sources are not permitted that would alter, revise or otherwise change the meaning or record of Holy Scripture.

When in Athens in mid first century Paul preached apologetically, carefully laying his foundation to preach Christ and the resurrection of the dead. There near the Acropolis in Athens, Paul preached to atheistic Epicureans and pantheistic Stoics, he used the writings of well known poets of the day, perhaps one of the monotheistic Atatus, Epimenides or Cleanthes.

Jude, Jesus’ half brother and an acknowledged leader of the first century Church in Jerusalem referred to at least two extra-Biblical sources, the cited portions therein thus certified to be historically accurate.

Up-to-date literature on the subject seems in agreement that fossil beds, where fossil beds show up on a large scale, are produced by sudden events, such as floods and volcanoes. Over hundreds or thousands of years, the sediments around these remains harden, converted into rock.

We've been discussing the fact that evolutionary theory, or any theory for that matter, that claims that it can explain the origin of all living things, but can not provide a mechanism by which such origins can occur, is just plain and simple, bad theory.

Evolutionists would perhaps like to gloss over this point, but mutations, being the only mechanism for the development of new information within a DNA molecule, is positioned like an non-scaleable wall between the theory of evolution and real, natural life. And dating the strata in which these fossils are found by the presupposed dates when the creatures they represent lived uses a form of logic that is popularly referred to as "circular reasoning?. You can not depend on dating methods that date a fossil by its strata and then date the strata by its fossil.

It can be fairly said that a theory that claims that it explains the origin of all living things but can not provide a mechanism by which such origins can occur is a very bad theory. It is a certainty that many of the pictures that we as children in school can remember to reinforce evolutionary explanation have since been discarded.  Yet, they are still in books and kids are still being taught them, and such images are still etched in our minds. Do you remember those peppered moths? In your school text book you are presented with two photos, taken of a species of moth. One was taken a hundred years after the first one. The first one shows a black peppered moth well disguised against trees that have been blackened during the 19th century coal-burning industrial revolution in
London. You read below the photograph that these black ones are all that are left because the white colored moths have been picked off by predators, being contrasted against the dark, coal-stained surfaces in London. Next page you are shown a similar tree a hundred years later. The use of coal has greatly decreased and whitish lichen now covers the trees of London. Now, according to the photo caption, only white ones can be found in the city. Thus, natural selection is dramatically demonstrated.

We've been talking about the supposed evolution from fish to amphibians, and how the supposed transitional forms found between the two, are not viewed by most creationists as true transitional forms. And we began distinguishing between mutations between species and variation among kinds, how such variation allows changes among kinds of creatures to survive ever-changing climates and other environmental factors..to be fruitful and multiply, as stated by God within Scripture. Just as variation occurs with dogs, for example, where every dog-type, from Pekinese to St. Bernard, all originating from the DNA of the wolf, or as that with the many different types of beaks in finches noticed by Darwin when he visited Galapegos, animals adapt and are fitted to their environment. It is pre-built into their genetic material to be able to do so.

What one can miss, if they are not careful, is that these changes are downward or horizontal, not upwardly vertical. Nothing new is created in the process.

Last time we were discussing the various supposed transitional forms, or missing links, that have been proposed by evolutionists to contribute to the evolution of fish into amphibians. Of course, though obvious and intuitive, it has been mentioned many times that true missing links, that show single, beneficial mutations and incomplete transitions, must have lived in order to transfer their incomplete, not-yet-useful traits, to their progeny, which could then combine with another similar mutation during some far future event, to eventually form a discernible, useful new trait. But such are missing in their millions. Until such fossils are found, evolutionists, whether unconsciously or purposely, redefine the term “missing link?. To an evolutionist today, a missing link is one that, though all of its features are fully formed, has characteristics in common with the two it supposedly links. One website cites a whole list of fossils filling the “missing link? between lobe-finned fish and tetrapods, most of them discovered just since 1987. Others have been found as recently as 2006. The Panderichthys, for example, is supposedly a fish which had very similar skull and fin bones to some amphibians, so, say they, they must have later evolved to become amphibians.

Evolutionists believe that amphibians evolved from one of three orders of lobe-finned fishes: either lungfish, coelacanths, or extinct ancient fish. Evolutionists apparently haven’t quite decided which yet. Coelacanths never leave the water, but they are said to have four arm-link fins, resembling the beginnings of legs.

Unfortunately for the evolutionist paradigm, the only animals for which fossils are widely available after these ancient fish are the Ichthyostega, and those already had well-developed legs and toes. The Creationist challenge is simply that the fossil record supplies none of the supposed links of plant to animal, fish to amphibian, amphibian to reptile, or reptile to birds and mammals.

My big-hearted and tireless Springer Spaniel has rarely in his life, if ever, been fed in the kitchen. He’s not allowed to sit at the table, and he never gets fed directly from anyone’s plate. But, every night, without fail, this loveable dreamer stares expectantly at each of us, as we sit down to eat, in hope and excited anticipation of receiving some food gift during dinner. It never happens, but he will nevertheless try again tonight. In this, as in other ways, my Spaniel lends insight to some attributes of human nature.

So next time you look up at that Moon, whether ¼, ½, full or whatever phase, recall to your mind that its testimony is staring you right in the face. First, take note, that its light is only reflected light from the Sun. So we, when at our best, are merely reflections of the light from the Son of God. Second, we could notice that the moon’s  size, speed of orbit, distance from the Earth necessary for ocean circulation and tidal, biological life, its effect on the gradual slowing of Earth’s rotation, its gradual, orbital drift, demonstrates to us that, since the fourth day of creation, this beautiful silvery object has orbited the earth, as David proclaims in Psalm 33, By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth. For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.

Earlier we were looking at the wonderful testimony of the Moon, Sun and planets in our Solar System. But it would benefit us to look a little more closely at some of these heavenly bodies, beginning with our Moon. The Moon is just the right size, is just the right distance, and revolves at just the right speed around the Earth. It’s mass in proportion to the Earth is unique in all the Solar system. It’s 10 times that of any other Moon-planet relationship, providing scriptural evening light, phased to give us the promised accurate time record. If the Moon was much closer or farther from the Earth, it is likely that tidal influences could prevent life from even existing on Earth. The same effects would occur if the Moon’s orbit about the Earth was a little faster or a little slower. The earth’s gravity keeps the Moon in orbit, and is so strong that it would need a steel cable 850 km (531 miles) in diameter to provide an equivalent binding force without breaking. The Moon rotates around its own axis once every 29½ days, counterclockwise with the Earth’s rotation, locked in with its revolution about the Earth.

As the Bible student looks at the tremendous complexities of our moon and how, in so many ways, it affects life on earth, a deeper sense of awe and mystery is felt, so Scripture once again is manifested as more than mere statement of fact, when declaring,  And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

Recently we’ve been looking at just a few of the hundreds of Apostolic Fathers whose writings have been discovered. We’ve looked at Clement of Rome, Ignatiius, Polycarp, Justin Martyr, Marcus Felix and Irenaeus. Now, some critics of our times, professing to be Biblical scholars, have presented, as a result of their analyses, that Christ Himself, as well as the apostles and writers of the New Testament, are really the products of a “Christ myth?, a fabrication, folk-lore that has developed over some period of time into what we call today New Testament Christianity.

But knowing what we now know, one will find it difficult to disagree with the conclusion by the eminent Rylands University scholar, F.F. Bruce, stating near the end of his book “Some writers may toy with the fancy of a Christ-myth, but they do not do so on the ground of historical evidence. The historicity of Christ is as axiomatic for an unbiased historian as that of Julius Caesar. It is not the historians who propagate the “Christ-myth theories.?

As we catch a glimpse of first and early second century writings and memoirs of devout Christian writers, we should not leave out Polycarp. Ignatius was, it seems, somewhat of a mentor to Polycarp, and both Ignatius and Polycarp disciples of John.

John’s influence on Polycarp is evident in his letter to the Philippian church, quoting 1st John 4:3, for example, stating, “For every one who shall not confess that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is antichrist?. And Polycarp also borrows heavily from 1st and 2nd Timothy, when he wrote “I exhort you all therefore to be obedient to the word of righteousness and to practice all endurance, which you saw with your own eyes in Ignatius, Zosimus, Rufus, in others also who came from among yourselves, as well as in Paul and the rest of the Apostles;

In this series so far we’ve boarded our time machine and briefly visited the first and second century church through the recorded lives of Clement, Ignatius and Justin Martyr. Let’s now look at some memoirs that have been found of a Christian lawyer, Marcus Felix, written sometime after Justin Martyr’s death, in polished, elegant Latin style.

The story, entitled Octavius, begins with a description of a leisurely journey taken by three reunited friends, Octavius, Caecilius and Marcus Felix, as they walk on the sands and great rocks along the ancient port of Rome, the seaside resort of Ostia.

As most of us are aware, John was the last of the Apostles to die, according to such reliable records as those of Clement, who was alive during and beyond John’s life and death, and Irenaeus, who we’ll talk about later. Both clarify that John lived into the reign of the Roman Emperor Trajan, who reigned from 98 through 117 AD. About 25 years after John’s death, a young philosopher named Justin began a spiritual journey of his own. One day, while taking his routine walk through a field overlooking the
Mediterranean, he noticed he was being followed by an old man. Wanting his privacy for daily meditation, Justin became annoyed as the old man approached and then presented him with a series of troubling questions, challenging his philosophies.

As afore-mentioned, the writings and records of hundreds of great Christian living in the first centuries of the Church have now been found. So far we’ve briefly looked at the life of Clement of Rome, very likely the third pastor, or bishop of Rome after the apostles, Linus, mentioned by Paul in II Timothy 4:21, being the first. Next we’ll look at Ignatius, also called Theophorus. He was, according to Eusebius, the second bishop of Antioch after Peter. A bold and fearless martyr for his Christian testimony,  Theophorus, Latin for “the God Hearer?, when asked by Emporer Trajan, “And who is Theophorus?? answered, “He who has Christ in his heart?.

In these critical times some Christians, and non-Christians, young and old, are stumbled, hampered by disinformation, false facts, presented by critics of the Scripture. Poorly qualified and far-from-center Bible scholars are courted by the media, themselves ignorant and out-of-date, delivering to the public their dismal reports. These critics’ “proofs? that the Scriptures are inaccurate and largely non-historical, are little more than thinly disguised exposition of popular liberal thinking, characterized by vague suppositions, poor Biblical scholarship and ignorance of contextual, scriptural meanings. The writings and records of hundreds of great Christian living in the first centuries of the Church have now been found. Their rich testimonies are backgrounded in historic certainty far beyond any other ancient documents of their era.

Last time we began to embark on a journey through time, introducing some of those champions of faith, using Eusebius, the third century historian, as well as other viable sources. The power, reliability and accuracy of God's Word is preserved and presented to us by the mosaic comprised of their lives and deaths. Eusebius, as one source, living between 263 and 339 AD, has often been dubbed the Father of Ecclesiastical History. This great historian enthusiastically dedicated his life and energy to documenting the first 300 years of Church history. When reading his summary, History of the Church, it quickly becomes clear that his theme is :  the working of God"s providence through the apostolic succession.

Sometimes, when I’m feeling like I’m having a rough time, I’ll crack open and read a chapter out of Foxe’s Book of Martyrs. While reading this historical account of persecutions all the way back to Nero’s in AD 67, one can’t help but be amazed at the grace of God, and the courage of these lovers of God, these martyrs for Christ. And John Foxe knew the scriptures, Old Testament and New, clearly understanding grace, forgiveness, communion, and the Son-ship and the deity of Christ. John Foxe, who lived from 1516 to 1587, recorded the persecutions and martyrdoms of notable Christians, from Coomans, Hues and others in 1568, Ridley and Latimer in 1555, Calvin, Huss, Bunyan, Tyndale, Luther and Wickliffe, to the early 1300’s, and thence back to the Apostles themselves. When you read the writings of ancient, devout followers of Christ, you are peering into their spiritual insights, personal prayer lives, opinions about entertainment, clothing, work, and every other aspect of daily life.

Today we’re going to go ahead and add some basics about radioactivity to what we have recently discussed. Various events (especially melting of the rock such as that seen during a volcanic eruption) will cause the elements in a rock to redistribute. Theoretically, when the rock solidifies it can be thought of as starting a stopwatch. By finding the amount of the parent and daughter isotopes present scientists can determine when the stopwatch started. Therefore, newly formed volcanic rock, if properly dated, must be found to be only as old as the eruption that formed it.

Surprise! The RATE Group, a group of scientists dedicated to a focused study to test these assumptions, have found that study of such rocks, known to be only recently formed in volcanoes, have revealed that molten magma actually absorbs argon into its crystal molecular lattice while cooling, and perhaps thereafter.

Last time we were introducing the concept of radiometric dating by looking at the basic structure as it may be understood of an atom, and how unstable atoms comprise materials that are described as radioactive. We then introduced one, probably the most popular, dating method, based on the known rate of potassium to turn into argon. At that point we brought up the fact that this and the other radiometric dating methods are under fire these days, even among some evolutionists.

According to all we know today about physical matter, it is made up of atoms, and, even though you can't see them, these atoms make up everything you see, touch, smell, etc. Getting a basic understanding of radioactivity can begin with that of a useful model of the atom, the Bohr Model, named after Niels Bohr who proposed the structure in 1913, that most of us recall from high school or college. Looking much like a tiny solar system, this model consists of a central nucleus, composed of neutrons and protons, surrounded by electrons that "orbit? around the nucleus. Protons carry a positive charge, neutrons (which are actually built from protons and electrons) are electrically “neutral?, and the electron is negative.

It seems obvious that this amazing animal is another example of special design. When did it start building dams? How did it do so without the teeth? Why don’t land animals have transparent eyelids? Which came first, the non-sensitive, ever-growing, protruding, tree-cutting teeth or the building of dams. How would such teeth be useful if tree cutting were not required? Which came first, the double fur coat insulation, specialized feet and rudder tail or the beaver’s watery habitat preferences? How many beaver kits had to die of asphyxiation before proper ventilation techniques and escape hatch building were begun, and why would an animal put themselves in such a house without these design characteristics. Many more “which came first? and “how did the animal survive while developing it? kinds of questions come to mind when one looks at the beaver.

Last couple of discussions about the beaver have been about its remarkable design, specialized for aquatic life, and its uncanny dam, food storage, den and canal building skills. The beaver is a capable builder. Its best-known structures, the dams, are built by beavers that need to enlarge the underwater habitat open to them in winter. The dam creates a pond deep enough not to freeze to the bottom, providing storage for winter food and year-round underwater access to the lodge secure from predators.

We were looking last time at some of the very specialized physical attributes of the beaver, the Northwest’s largest rodent; its double insulating fur coat, specialized teeth and lips, transparent eyelids, its ability to close ears and nose, and even to chew underwater, that all work together marvelously to make the beaver perfect for its watery environment. Engineers are specially trained to alter habitat, beneficially, and, by design. The beaver, though not bright enough to earn an engineering degree in any university I am aware of, also alters its habitat. For example, the beaver is most comfortable in water, adapts its environment for the defense of itself and its family.

The beaver is an interesting animal to study. It is North America's largest rodent, found throughout most of the forested portions of the Northwest. Over the next several sessions we’ll look at a few of the beaver’s specialized physiological features, its dam-building and lodge building, and, pose a few questions about some of the designed features and habits of this remarkable animal. While we’re at it, we can also talk about the woodpecker, another very specialized of God’s creatures.

It’s not widely taught in physics, mathematics and engineering classrooms that the great giant in the development of classical physics, the calculus, optics and other disciplines in science, Sir Isaac Newton, wrote and studied more about the Bible than he did in the sciences. Newton's writings on theological and biblical subjects alone amount to about 1.3 million words, the equivalent of 20 of today's standard length books. Concerning Biblical prophecy, Newton made it clear that the study of scripture was not purposed for some self glorifying knowledge, stating: “God gave the prophecies, not to gratify men's curiosity by enabling them to foreknow things, but that after they were fulfilled they might be interpreted by the event, and His own providence, not the interpreters, be thereby manifested to the world.?

As new noted last time, Sir Isaac Newton, mathematician and physicist, is generally acknowledged to be one of the foremost scientific intellects of all time.
Newton’s Principia states the foundations of the science of mechanics, developing upon them the mathematics of orbital motion, and also introduces the theory of fluids. From the density of air he calculated the speed of sound waves. Newton also proposed that both the planet and the Sun orbited around the planet-Sun system, and then modified Kepler's 3rd Law. But it usually isn’t mentioned in class to physics, math and engineering students that Isaac Newton owned more books on humanistic learning than on mathematics and science, and that all his life he studied them deeply. His unpublished classical scholia reveal his knowledge of pre-Socratic philosophy. He read the Fathers of the Church even more deeply.

Completing our series on the apparent paradox, which came first, the chicken or the egg, we begin by summarizing what we’ve discussed before. We’ve first noted that the developing chick embryo is fed, supplied water, protected, held in place, and supplied with oxygen and warmth from the outside world, via a mind-boggling set of marvelously ordered and purposed events, occurring within a complex and perfect structure, which we call the chicken egg. Important questions were also posed as to how such processes and structures could naturally and blindly come to be encoded perfectly within a chicken’s DNA.

It seems to me obvious that the amazing structure and function of the humble chicken egg is carefully designed to house and facilitate the startling processes of a developing a chick embryo into, by a miraculous, 20 day chain of complex events, a baby chick. Now, it may be time to test the evolutionary belief taught to many of our children that tiny, graduated, beneficial mutations slowly could have resulted in the development of a chick embryo inside this ingenious egg. Indeed, a number of important questions come to mind.

Last time we were taking a closer look at the humble chicken egg. And humble it seems, as one casually takes this wondrous 2 inch-long package out of the frig and holds it between the thumb and forefinger. But, if this same egg had been fertilized by a rooster and allowed to be kept warm under a chicken, over the next 20 days of incubation, a remarkable and miraculous chain of events would occur. And, to exemplify the obvious pre-thought put into this design, the blood vessels to provide oxygen, and others to eliminate waste, attached to membrane lining, and still others growing out of the chick, connecting it to the yolk to provide nourishment, the development of an air sac, the chick's instinctive positioning of its head near that air cell, the directing and double bending of its neck, were enlisted last time.

Last time we were looking at that amazing chemist, the Bombardier Beetle, who, though having a brain capacity smaller than the head of a pin, is able to safety mix caustic chemicals and deliver them to its attacker as a pressurized, boiling hot spray.

Another one I like is the woodpecker. Each strike of the beak must be straight on or else the shear force could break the beak or smash its brain. As the beak strikes, the bird's eyelids close to prevent them from popping out.

Now try to think of this creature evolving. Comments on the subject have been put out by biologists like Dr. Robert Koufal, Dr. Gary Parker, Dr. Duane Gish and Dr. Jobe Martin. The beetle, on his way to becoming a bombardier beetle, would have to carefully store the chemicals in a storage chamber apart from the enzymes but in the presence of an inhibitor to prevent them from reacting prematurely with one another. His system also would have to select the correct enzymes needed to catalyze the chemical reactions involved, and then evolved to secrete them into the combustion chamber. The combustion chamber itself must be able to resist the corrosive effect of the hot, irritating chemicals and strong enough to contain the high pressure without rupturing. The combustion chamber must also be equipped with a highly efficient valve, and the appropriate muscles must exist to manipulate the combustion tube and point it in the right direction.

The popular concept today of irreducible complexity has been introduced in previous programs. Though it provides positive proof to the open-minded of the fact that this world has been designed and created by God, it is to many a difficult one to wrap the mind around. Nevertheless, kids and adults alike can delight in the illustrations brought out these days by taking a closer look at animals dramatically demonstrating God's design.

A popular one is the Bombardier Beetle. This amazing little bug utilizes chemicals typically metabolized by its species in remarkable, irreducible ways. Evolutionists find fault with this example but they do not succeed in explaining how the bombardier beetle could have evolved.

It was Maxwell, a strong opponent of

Darwin, that mathematically refuted LePlace's atheistic nebular hypothesis. Herschel stated that the undevout astronomer must be mad.

Newton acknowledged the Bible as "the most sublime philosophy?, finding “more sure marks of authenticity in the Bible that in any profane history whatsoever"?. These mentioned here, who lived before, during and after

Darwin, are only a sample of the many thousands in history, and many thousands, perhaps millions, of scientists today, that can not accept the dogmatic tenets of evolutionary theory. Actually, it is the contention of many creationists that, as Wilder-Smith borrowed to entitle one of his books, the Natural Sciences No Nothing of Evolution.

Today, engineers and physicists solve most problems using Isaac Newton's mechanics and mathematics, though

Newton has been dead for nearly 300 years.

Newton was the first to demonstrate that the same natural laws govern both earthly motion and celestial motion. He is associated with the scientific revolution and the advancement of heliocentrism, the mathematical substantiation for and expansion of Kepler"s laws, for his arguments that light was composed of particles, laws of optics, cooling, the binomial theorem in its entirety; and the principles of conservation of momentum. Finally, he studied the speed of sound in air, and voiced a theory of the origin of stars.

As the great astronomer, Johann Kepler, the one who in the late 16th century presented the mathematical and physical laws governing planetary motion said “I had the intention of becoming a theologian...but now I see how God is, by my endeavors, also glorified in astronomy, for 'the heavens declare the glory of God. We've been looking at the gas helium, a component of our atmosphere. It is fairly rare, about one part in 200,000, but, nevertheless, the mix of the rare gases are of immense importance, affecting our weather and climactic balance.

Much could be mentioned about uses we have found for this gas. Helium is used in lighter than air balloons and blimps, and while heavier than hydrogen, is far safer since it doesn"t burn. It is used as an inert gas shield for arc welding; pressuring liquid fuel rockets; and as a gas for supersonic wind tunnels. It has been put forth that there is but a fraction of the helium that it seems there should be, given the Earth is as old as evolutionists need it to be. Since the colorless and odorless helium is one of the noble gases, being non-reactive, like argon, it does not form other compounds, but remains by itself, easy to track.

We were noting last time that some physicists and physical chemists like Drs. Cook, Vardiman and Humphreys have demonstrated over the years that there is up to a million times less helium in our atmosphere than there would be had the Earth existed for 4.5 billion years. Even using the most conservative estimations, the present abundance of one type of He would accumulate in 1.8 million years, and only 370 thousand years would be required to supply the atmosphere with its present content of another isotope of He. In the most extreme case of we have 3,000 times too small an amount of Helium in our atmosphere. Evolutionists must reason, therefore, that the helium must be somehow escaping from the atmosphere.

The main process which has been considered to explain the excessive loss of helium by long-age theorists is thermal escape. This is the process whereby light gas molecules or atoms can escape from the gravitational attraction of a planet, if they exceed the escape velocity. But, as Vardiman demonstrates by citing fully accepted documentation, even if helium did escape at any scientifically acceptable rate, the present abundance in the atmosphere of one isotope of Helium, 4He, containing two protons and two neutrons, would still accumulate in about two million years, far short of the billions of years necessary for evolution.

As most of us know, to one degree or another, our atmosphere is a mixture of a number of different gases. The atmosphere is the mixture of gases and other materials that surround the Earth in a thin, mostly transparent shell. It is held in place by the Earth's gravity. The main components are nitrogen (78.09%), oxygen (20.95%), argon (0.93%), and carbon dioxide (0.03%).

We are immersed in an ocean of air and, at sea level, we are at its bottom. Air weighs about .075 pounds per cubic foot. As a result of all the air above us, we experience about 14.7 pounds per square foot of atmospheric pressure.

But among the other gases in the atmosphere we could discuss today, helium is very interesting.

According to all the physics we know today, the evolution of the sun requires that it was too cold for life to form billions of years ago. How do evolutionists resolve this paradox?

It may be helpful to recall that evolutionists theorize that, on early Earth, life forms, like microscopic algae, are supposed to have introduced free oxygen into the air and regulated the amount of other gases. The original atmosphere on Earth, say they, was a reducing atmosphere. The term "reducing? is used to describe chemical reactions containing free hydrogen. Originally, they postulated an atmosphere consisting of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), carbon monoxide (CO), ammonia (NH3), free hydrogen and water vapor. Newer schemes exclude ammonia and methane. This is certainly topic for another discussion.

So as new forms of life evolved, the mix of gases in Earth's atmosphere gradually changed. Carl Sagan, among others, proposed that the early atmosphere contained a greater amount of greenhouse gases (such as methane) than today, and that this would have produced average temperatures close to those today, even with a much fainter Sun. As the Sun gradually increased in luminosity, Earth's atmosphere is supposed to have evolved along with it, so that the amount of greenhouse gases have slowly decreased to compensate for the increasing solar luminosity.

The general explanation for the independent creation of a star begins with incredibly large expanses of dust and gases, which congeal by gravity in the emptiness of space, heating up as it collects more and more material. This hot collection of material is called a protostar. When a protostar’s center reaches a high enough temperature for fusion to begin, then the star has theoretically joined the main sequence, the phase in which it will spend most of its life.

Supposedly the Sun has been a main-sequence star since its formation about 4.6 billion years ago. This time represents about half the assumed ten-billion-year main-sequence lifetime of the Sun, so the Sun should have used about half its energy store by now. This means that about half the hydrogen in the core of the Sun has been used up and replaced by helium. This necessitates that the Sun is nearly 40% brighter than it was 4.6 billion years ago, and a 40% change in solar luminosity would have produced dramatic climatic changes.

Have you ever heard of THE EARLY FAINT SUN PARADOX? Well, it goes as follows: four billion years ago the sun (its fusion fire not yet having worked up to present levels) would be 40% cooler than now. Meanwhile, Earth’s surface temperatures would be too cold, a hostile environment, and would preclude liquid water; an ice planet. So, how then did life form in these early eras?

Now, a star is viewed today as a ball of gas held together by its own gravity, which is continually trying to cause the star to collapse. The pressure of hot gas and/or radiation in the star's interior counterbalances its gravity. During the lifetime of this star, the interior heat and radiation is provided by nuclear reactions near the center, and this phase of the star's life is called its main sequence. The physics behind these theories of star formation absolutely require that the young, main sequence star is much fainter, cooler, than it will be when it matures. Our Sun, of course, has to be at least as old as our Earth, however old that may be. So, the evolutionist must believe that, each and every day, over millions and billions of years, by sheer, happy coincidence, the Earth somehow maintained a heated environment, slowly and exactly cooling to match the gradual increases in the Sun’s temperature, in order to maintain the even, consistent temperatures absolutely essential to the theory of evolution of life.

This is the last of a series on the decline of the Earth's magnetic field. We"ve thereby noted and look briefly at the two opposing views on the phenomenon; Special Creation and Dynamo theories. Even evolutionists knowledgeable in the field, we’ve observed, acknowledge that the evolutionary magnetic sign reversal hypothesis has no valid theoretical support.

Dr. Barnes, in his book, The Decay of the Earth's Magnetic Moment and the Geochronological Implications, demonstrates that the reversal hypothesis has no  valid theoretical/mathematical basis or observational support. The paleomagnetic data upon which it depends does not correlate with the state of the earth's magnetic field, namely its magnetic moment. Further, the variations in the magnetic fields of Neptune and Uranus, measured during Voyager space explorations, challenge evolutionary theory and support creationist models. For example, Uranus, though producing very little heat, has a very strong magnetic field.

Last time we were looking at the two opposing theories, Special Creation and Evolutionary Dynamo theories, that are used to explain the unmistakable fact that the Earth's magnetic field is weakening.

Dr. Humphreys concludes that, at present, the only working theory for the origin, fluctuations, rapid reversals, and decay of the field is a creationist theory--a theory that fits all the data. Thus, according to the best theory and data we have, the earth's magnetic field certainly is less than 100,000 years old; very likely less than 10,000 years old, and fits in well with the face-value Biblical age of 6,000 years.

To protect their long-age chronology, evolutionists hold to a reversal hypothesis. The magnetic field is said to have remained at essentially the same value during geologic time, except for intervals in which it went through a reversal, dying down to zero and rising up again with the reverse polarity. The last reversal is supposed to have taken place 700,000 years ago. But the reversal hypothesis has no valid theoretical support. That is acknowledged in Carrigan, C.R. and David Gubbins, on page 125 of the February 1979 Scientific American article "The Source of the Earth's Magnetic Field," stating that "No one has developed an explanation of why the sign reversals take place. The apparent random reversals of the earth's dipole field have remained inscrutable." Neither are there any dependable data to support the reversal hypothesis.

We’ve been discussing the documented fact that the protective magnetic field  surrounding our earth is decaying, declining in strength, every year. As you may have expected, there are but two scientific explanations for this phenomenon, each excluding the other. The creationist view, that the Earth’s magnetic field is declining, and that that declination is calculable, is demonstrated by Dr. Barnes, who showed that this decay is exponential and so has a half-life of 1400 years.

The evolutionary "dynamo" theories claim that complex processes in the earth's core have converted heat energy into electrical energy, much like an electric generator, maintaining the field for billions of years. Many intelligent scientists have been working on these dynamo theories for over four decades without great success. Furthermore, recent measurements of electric currents in the sea floor weigh heavily against the most popular class of dynamo theories.

Perhaps you have gone on hikes or camping sometime in the past and have had occasion to make use of a compass. As far as we can tell, inside the earth is a big ball of iron, which is magnetically charged, and so produces a magnetic field. How that core is charged will be a major topic in this series, and, as you will see, presents serious problems for the evolutionist. Now the lines of the Earth's magnetic field all point in one direction.

So, inside a compass is a small magnet attached to a needle. Most of us know that magnets attract each other and so the magnet of the needle is attracted to the magnet produced by the Earth. Since the Earth"s magnetic lines always point in one direction, the compass needle will also point in one direction. The magnet is placed in the needle so that it points North. Obviously, once we figure out where the North is, we can decipher where South, East and West are as well.

In the last few sessions we have been discoursing about the history of language, and how the consensus of scientific and historical inquiry today has concluded that language shows no evidence of any relationship to animal communication. Gradualism is not seen in language. On the contrary, human languages appear suddenly, complex and ingenious.

Dr. Henry Morris summarizes well when he theorizes that either of two alternatives must explain the history of language:

(1) There was an original population of men, possibly up to four million years ago, with a highly complex language and culture. This original population somehow broke up into a number of separate populations, each developing independently for so long that the extreme peculiarities of its language emerged as a remnant of the ancestral language. OR….

(2) There was an original population of men several thousand years ago that once used a complex ancestral language, but then broke up into smaller populations. This break-up was accomplished in a traumatic separation, accomplished by a sudden transforming of the one original language into a number of distinctively and uniquely different languages.

Last time we spoke of the very clear and poignant fact that what we know of the history of human language does not support evolutionary long age development and hunter-gatherer scenarios. Today, let’s look a little more closely at how language is analyzed and what the most knowledgeable in the field are saying today.

Modern, scientific study of language has categorized as 1) proto-Indo-European (which is branched to Indo-Iranian, after Jones’ studies in 1786, Baltic, Slavic, Armenian, Greek, Albanian, Celtic, Roman, and Germanic); 2) Afro-Asiatic (Egyptian, Semitic, Cushatic, Berber and Chad); 3) Sino-Tibetan (Mandarin and all Chinese speaking); 4) Dravidian (Southern Indian)and 5) Ural (Northern Asia and parts of Europe) divisions. Let’s leave out the more recent, American languages.

We began our last session introducing the contrast between the evolutionary view of human language and cultural development and that described in Genesis. We first noted that, regardless of extravagant claims made by those wishing to bridge the gap between human and animal language, all we know today from our greatest experts on the subject is that the gap is unbridgeable.

Due to the tremendous lack of hard evidence to support their claims of long ages, evolutionists are forced to invent outlandish theories about language development. To accept these we must accept that people of ancient cultures were unable to write anything for hundreds of thousands to millions of years! So, for just a moment, let’s instead look to what we know.

A very important physical ability distinguishing man from apes and other animals is his capacity of language. The ability to communicate with others of his own kind in abstract, symbolic speech is unique to man, and the evolutionist has never been able to bridge the tremendous gulf between this ability and the grunts and barks and chatterings of animals.

Some researchers have, of course, made extravagant claims as to the potentiality of teaching chimpanzees to speak, for example, or have developed highly imaginative speculations as to how animal noises may have evolved into human languages. Such notions are, however, not based on real scientific observation or evidence.

The Roman Historian, A.N. Sherwin-White comments on the book of Acts, for example, by stating "For Acts the confirmation of historicity is overwhelming…Any attempt to reject its basic historicity must now appear absurd. Roman historians have long taken it for granted"? Other great archaeologists, Ramsay, Glueck, Albright, Warwick, Unger, and the list goes on and on, state the same about their findings.

And now we have enough evidence, just from letters among Christians who were contemporary and lived just after the apostles, to place all of the writings of the New Testament in the first century.

Dr. Clifford Wilson, a Biblical archaeologist and linguist, in his book EBLA TABLETS: Secrets of a Forgotten City documents the findings at Ebla, on the main road to Aleppo in Northern Syria. Possibly the most significant discovery yet made relating to the background of early Bible times, these describe a period 1000 years before Moses. First excavated by Professor Matthiae of the Rome University in 1964, thousands of tablets are uncovered each year. The tablets deal with statistics, economic matters, offerings to the gods, names of many Biblical cities (including Sodom and Gomorrah), trade routes, provides multilingual vocabulary lists, and judicial proceedings.

It’s generally known that the vast majority of people in this world and throughout the ages have believed in God. In modern times, of the major religions, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism and Islam, all but Hinduism and Buddhism, are monotheistic, acknowledging but one God. Of all these religions, Christianity and Judaism are unique, distinguished from all others in their historicity…they are historic. There is, from this very day, an unbroken chain of documented and undeniable history… all the way to the cross, and from thence back through the centuries of
Israel’s past.

This is the last of the enlisting of the positions about origins held in common by most modern creationists. We've defined the basics of evolutionary mechanisms, marveled at some examples of the thousands of factors required for the preservation of life on Earth, noticed the deep human longing for heaven, that the vast ages presented to us by evolutionists are not required nor are such vast ages supported by scripture. We"ve, perhaps reluctantly, been forced to conclude that there really is no compromise between these two diametrically opposed views.

Indeed, the evolution-creation controversy begins to appear more like a war that a debate or discussion. One Christian writer, a scientist, cites articles with titles like this one "Is Religion a Form of Mental Illness?"

In this series of discussions we have been attempting to clarify and present beliefs held in common by most modern creationists. We've underlined the basics of evolutionary mechanisms, natural selection and beneficial mutation, exemplified the thousands of factors beneficently ordered to nurture and preserve life on Earth, that human kind is clearly wired, and so longs for, heaven, that the vast ages propagated by evolutionists are not required nor should be asserted to exist, neither are such vast ages supported by scripture.

Added to these must be the essential realization that, when taken to their logical ends, the doctrines of Darwinian evolution and special creationism are mutually exclusive.

So far in this series we’ve examined the mechanisms of evolution; natural selection and beneficial mutation, presented as the creator of all life, and demonstrated why such mechanisms could not have produced the design and complexity found in living things. Secondly, we put out a short list to exemplify the thousands of factors beneficently ordered to nurture and preserve life on Earth. Finally, we cited the deep desire inside ourselves, and in past and present cultures around the globe, as strong evidence for a creator. We are clearly wired, and so long for, heaven.

Last time we began a series of discussions summarizing concepts and ideas that all informed creationists hold in common by introducing the two mechanisms of evolutionary theory, natural selection and beneficial mutations. We put forth the conclusion that these mechanisms are entirely inadequate to explain origin of life and origin of species, and that all scripture, as well as hard facts derived from scientific inquiry, testify that the working systems within living things are inseparable, incredibly complicated and integrated; irreducibly complex, requiring forethought and design.

There are certainly basics with which all creationists agree, and I’d like to discuss one of them today.

A good first step to understanding the evolutionary position is to know that there are only two mechanisms to evolution, when evolution is defined as the creator of all living things. One mechanism, called natural selection, or survival of the fittest, is factual, observable, and accepted by informed creationists, as well as evolutionists...

Last couple of days we've been reviewing the seeming paradox of the Biblical proclamation that all the heavenly bodies were created on the fourth day of creation, just days before the creation of Adam, contrasted with scientific understanding today of the speed of light and the unimaginable dimensions of the universe. How could objects and events thousands, millions, even billions of light years away from us be seen if created within the short history of mankind, as seeming to have been reported by Scripture?

We also have been discussing the theoretical and proven understanding that time is slowed down in proportion to the density of mass. Yes, time moves slower when closer to matter. Now, for just a moment, picture all the matter in the universe being in one place. If you were to have two clocks during the first days of creation, one clock located near the entire, incredibly dense mass of the universe, estimated today to be 1051 kilograms, and another clock located far enough away, relativistic calculations show that the clock far away would measure billions of years of time passing, while the clock close to the total mass of the universe is slowed and only registers a single day! As inconceivable as it may be, there is no absolute time. The belief held by evolutionists that the universe is infinite with no boundary is, as stated by Hawkings in his book, a Brief History in Time, is completely arbitrary.

So, now picture for a moment a Biblical, expanding universe, that does have a boundary, and a center, and an earth relatively close to that center...

Last time we were talking about the fact that contextual study of the Old and New Testaments seem show the Earth to be young and that, in addition, geological phenomena like canyons, tectonic plate drifting, limestone cave creation, coal bedding, forest petrification, dinosaur graveyards, soil and rock stratification, nuclear decay, believed by many to have occurred over millions and billions of years, are being demonstrated to occur catastrophically, in very short periods of time, sometimes only minutes.

In contrast to the big bang theory, the Scriptural record states that the universe is not infinite. Solomon stated in I Kings 8 and in II Chronicles , Chapters 2 and 6, that the cosmos cannot contain God and it is recorded in Isaiah 40:12 that God measured the cosmos between His thumb and forefinger. Genesis Chapter 1 described that the cosmos, or the firmament, is bounded by waters above and below.

But, still, the issue of light being visible from systems and events too far away have troubled young earth creationists for the last century, and more so recently as convincing data regarding the hugeness of the universe has continued to accumulate...

As most of us have heard, light travels at about 186,000 miles per second. At this rate, light travels about 6 trillion miles in one year, and this distance is called one light-year. Now there are galaxies that are probably billions of light-years distant from us in space. This means that the light, which left a galaxy, say, 5 billion years ago, should just now be reaching us, if it and we have been around for five billion years. So, if in fact the stars were only, say, 6 - 10,000 years old, the light from these distant galaxies would not have had nearly enough time to reach us.

The Big Bang Theory is the dominant scientific theory about the origin of the universe. According to the big bang, the universe was created sometime between 10 billion and 20 billion years ago from a cosmic explosion that hurled matter and in all directions. The big bang was initially suggested in 1927 because it explains why distant galaxies are traveling away from us at great speeds. Four observations, Expansion of the Universe, Origin of the cosmic background radiation, Synthesis of the light elements, and Formation of galaxies and large-scale structure are cited today as proof of the big bang theory...

From time to time I run into folks, Christian and non-Christian, who hold the belief that the evolution-creation debate is somewhat trivial, that it is relatively unimportant. Such a controversy, say they, is really inconsequential when compared to weightier matters of belief, doctrine, or theology. Legal contests that have occurred in this country in the last few decades, however, demonstrate the contrary. It could be helpful to first review a little legal history.

Back in 1789, the First Amendment of our Constitution was constructed, stating that "Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." ...jack

Black box analyses is used in many fields...mathematics, chemistry, computer programming, physics, and, Behe contends, in biology. It is often referred to as boundary analysis, because the analyst disregards what occurs inside the "box" and focuses on what crosses the boundary (what goes in and what comes out of the box). Regarding biology: energy and chemistry goes in and life supposedly comes out.

One of Behe's chief premises...we now know too much about what's inside the black box to hold a blind, evolutionary view.

Variation cannot be, in an honest and informed discussion, used to prove the tenets of evolutionary theory. Creation scientists know full well that the information in the DNA of a particular kind of organism has the wonderful capability to scramble the information that is already contained in its coding. This is how marvelous variety can occur within a given class of creatures. Darwin noticed this variation in finches, for example, at Galapagos.

What is now known, that Darwin didn’t know at that time, which was finally noticed by the scientific community about 40 years later, was presented by Gregor Mendal. Now considered to be the father of Genetics, Gregor Mendal demonstrated with his garden peas that variations in a species has nothing to do with new information, but the scrambling and recombination of information already existing.

After voicing his concerns about the growing popularity of creationism among biology teachers and school board presidents, Mr. Berra proceeds in his book to cite, as proof of evolution, homologies in vertebrates, “vestigial? organs and similarities in embryonic developments (pp 24 - 25), variation (for example finches on pp 28 -  29), rock strata fossils, radiometric dating, the archaeopteryx and the horse (pp 33 – 46), drug resistance in bacteria, the peppered moth, sickle cells and malaria (pp 47 – 62), the big bang, coacervate droplets, and primate relationships (pp 64 – 117).

But if free scientific discourse were to be tolerated, it would quickly be revealed to those who don’t already know it that, in fact, all of these discussions only are presenting examples, in all cases, of either variations within species and natural selection, or dreamt up, unsubstantiated scenarios, and certainly not the creation of anything new in a species or class.

In 1998, Tim Berra, Professor of Zoology, Ohio State University, put out an in-your-face book entitled Evolution and the Myth of Creationism.

This book displays a general attitude and aggressive approach to the evolution-creation debate that you can commonly see in similar books and articles produced by some of the leading evolutionists these days.

Like some of his peers, Mr. Berra can see clearly that there are a lot of people today that are questioning the assumptions and statements-of-fact being brought forth by some of today's evolutionary "mouthpieces?.

Over the last few days we've been presenting the laws of thermodynamics and how they align themselves strongly in support of Scripture and against evolutionism. It was previously mentioned that evolutionists claim that creationists misunderstand that the law defies evolution only in a closed system, and, due to the availability of the Sun"s energy, evolution of life on earth, by local increases in order, can occur.

But the late AW Wilder-Smith clarifies, in his book The Creation of Life, that this idea about the Sun providing energy for evolution is itself a misunderstanding of open and closed systems. In a presentation he picks up a stick off the ground, warmed by the hot Sun above, and rotting, and shows that the Sun, providing unorganized energy, heats up the stick, and so only serves to make the deterioration of the stick happen faster. The use of the Sun’s energy, which Smith calls teleonomy, can only be done by an intelligently designed plant. Smith, a brilliant scientist with three PhD’s in the biological field, clarifies that the spontaneous synthesis of life’s building blocks, and embedding of information within life, is made absolutely impossible by the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

We have been discussing thermodynamics and the fact that Scriptural statements about the creation of energy and matter, and the inevitable demise of all material things, is heavily supported by the four laws of thermodynamics. We left off last time with a little detail about the zeroth and first laws. Today and next time we will look a bit more closely at the Second and Third Laws.

The second law of thermodynamics builds upon the First law by stating that all energy, which according to the first law cannot be created or destroyed, experiences a universal process of change, and it is a directional change, but it is not an upward change.

We left off last time with the clear statements in Scripture that all things were, by God and only God, created, and though were originally enduring and highly organized, have, because of the phenomena of sin and disobedience, been hurled into a downward spiral of devolution and death.

These Biblical realities are heavily demonstrated by the laws of thermodynamics. Thermodynamics is one of those disciplines, heavily based in mathematics, that is supported by universally accepted, scientific laws. There are four such laws presented by thermodynamics. They are the Zeroth, First, Second and Third laws.

Julian Huxley, dubbed as Darwin’s bulldog, in his book "Evolution and Genetics?, presents evolution as that which “can be defined as a directional and essentially irreversible process occurring in time, which in its course gives rise to an increase of variety and an increasingly high level of organization in its products. Our present knowledge indeed forces us to the view that the whole of reality is evolution—a single process of self-transformation."

But despite such confident and unsupportable claims made by evolutionary apologists like Huxley, we at best only know what the accumulation of knowledge presents to be true. In science, we enunciate such accumulated knowledge in the form of laws, and the “meat and potatoes? of a given scientific law usually is associated with cause and effect relationships.

Last time we ended our discussion pondering how intelligent observers in the last century could miss such obvious facts as we’ve been discussing as they were developing theories about the origin of coal. It was proposed that, as is often is the case when discussing origins, that it may have to do with foundational beliefs, world views if you will, upon which any theory is built.

If you don’t believe, or worse, are vehemently opposed to the Biblical claim of a worldwide flood, then the idea of a violent, world-wide, sudden event occurring in marine waters creating coal beds is at best an idea that would not occur to you, and at worst is repulsive and perhaps a little frightening...Jack

This fourth of a five part, closer look at what most of us have been taught about coal and how it developed, continues to challenge the idea that coal developed in freshwater swamps over millions of years.

So far we’ve reviewed seven observable facts that demonstrate that coal contains marine plants and animals and so should not be theorized to have been generated from freshwater swamps; that coal beds are often impaled by tree trucks oriented in all directions and so should not be believed to have layered over long time periods; that the beds and the trees and roots within them often contain materials that are foreign to the areas where the coal beds are found. Something sudden and energetic, violent, not slow and calm, seems to be associated with coal beds. Also, we saw evidences that these beds are often too vast to be credible swamp floors, and that many coal beds found today are without soils beneath them, necessary to the swamp theory...Jack

We have been looking at the theories proposed for the origin of coal, and noting reasons for preferring the flood theory above the more commonly known swamp theory. The three reasons discussed last time; many plants found in coal are not swamp plants, trees found in coal beds sometimes contain energetically transported foreign material, and fossils of salt-water life is often found in coal, all seem to contradict the millions-of-years, slow layering, fresh-water swamp theory.

Now, a fourth observation supporting the flood theory: upright tree trunks penetrating tens of feet, perpendicular, diagonally positioned, or upside down, are sometimes found in and associated with coal beds, showing a short time period for coal forming before the tree could rot and fall. Because the tree is in growth position and shows no root regeneration, it probably was buried very quickly, certainly before it could decay...Jack

Last time we began to examine the two prevalent theories today used to explain the formation of coal on the Earth; the swamp theory and the flood theory, and how they fit into the Biblical record.

The swamp theory claims that, millions of years ago, much of our land was covered by freshwater swamps. In these swamps were leaves, stems, spores, free trunks, branches, plant roots, resins, charred wood from swamp fires, other organic material, and mineral (inorganic) matter were deposited within the swampy basins. This process continued for many years forming heavy, soggy layers and eventually a material called peat. Then dirt, sand and clay covered the peat and heat and pressure produced by these layers caused the peat to become rich carbon deposits. After millions of years, the story goes on to propose, these carbon deposits formed coal...Jack

What do you think about coal? Bet you didn’t expect that question today. Well, coal is important to the Bible-believer, because in its study one can find a powerful demonstration of Noah’s great Flood.

The first documented US coal mining was probably a 50 ton excavation that was dug in 1748. Today, we produce over one billion tons per year...  jack

Evolutionists today take comfort in the confident portrayals of the evolution of the eye over many millions of years. It is often cited in literature today that the human eye developed beneficial traits from a number of other simpler eyes found in nature. As usual, these citations beg serious questions. The eyes of any creatures living today, as well as any evidences found in fossils, are very, very complex.

Though ingenious in their fabrications, scenarios presented to demonstrate the development of an eye ask you to believe what is naturally impossible. Evolutionists casually present computer models, for example, showing that a fish eye can evolve in 364,000 generations. This modeling utilizes mutation rates that are known, but it is not mentioned the requirement that the mutation must be favorable, that is, useful to the development of a desired end, a complex, working eye...Jack

During these last few discussions we have looked at Dr. Asa Gray, Professor of natural history, his distinguished career, and his staunch support of Darwin’s theories. It has also been noted that Professor Gray was equally a staunch creationist, stating his belief to Darwin and others "that variation has been led along certain beneficial lines" like a stream "along definite and useful lines of irrigation." Dr. Gray made his opinion clear towards the end of his life, as well as to Darwin earlier, that order in nature, which is the basis of science, cannot reasonably-be severed from faith in an Ordainer, which is the basis of religion...jack

Look around. What do you see? Human beings can obtain a large amount of information about the surrounding environment through their sense of vision. But to see, we need light and the light-processing organs, called eyes. In the human eye, light enters the eye through the cornea, passes across the aqueous humor (the liquid behind the cornea), passes through the pupil and through the lens. The retina partners with the brain and processes some of the information it receives before passing the signal over the optic nerve to the visual center of the brain. The actual receptors are the rods and cones of the retina. There are three types of cones (red, yellow-green, and blue), and work best in bright light, and are also used in acuity or resolution. There are about 120 million rods in the human eye providing great pixel density. They are identical, but their connections vary significantly...jack

Recent studies show quite clearly that high school students' beliefs regarding origins are very important. One such recent study, used by David Ray, looked at four groups of school students from the eastern section of Atlanta, Georgia. The groups consisted of: two Christian school groups totaling 30 students; two church youth groups totaling 30 students; one public school class of 42 students; and one home school group of 30 students.  Details of this particular survey, its instruments, statistics and methods, can be found in a May 2002 ICR Impact article, by Steve Deckard, Ed.D., and Daniel Smithwick...Jack

In this day and age in which many have come to respect and even depend on the opinions of scientists and other educated or specially trained experts, the responsibility of those experts to correctly and fairly represent their field of knowledge has been amplified. Educators, in particular, have a special role in helping to form the opinions of young minds, guiding them into productive and useful lives, assisting them to formulate ideas and beliefs that will affect them and those they come in contact with for many years to come.

It is difficult these days to not be aware of the serious debate existing about all claims made by evolutionary materialists...Jack

We’ve been looking at a couple of interesting terms these last two days; axiom, and paradox. Thus we could better understand strategically why the enemy, Satan, spends so much time attacking Genesis, the book of origins, and so by attempting to present Genesis as a collection of ancient myths and allegories, indirectly attacks the very cross of Christ. We also examined the paradox of the salvation of the unrepentant by the repentance of the only one capable of perfect repentance, one who doesn’t need to repent. That perfect penitent is Christ...

Now, another paradox; Which came first, the chicken or the egg? To embrace this question, we must go outside of our experience. We have seen that eggs come from hens, so maybe the chicken came first. However, when fertilized by a rooster, the egg will produce, through a mind boggling series of complex processes, a baby chicken. We observe that this is the only way chickens come into the world. So the which came first question remains unanswered.

It is unanswered because the logical end of this question is one of origins...

Last time we defined the word axiom, a-x-i-o-m, as a basic truth or fact that does not need to be proven, because it’s foundational. Now I’m going to bring in another term…paradox. This word is more familiar. Paradox combines the para- root with the Greek word for "thought," something that takes us outside our normal thinking.

A paradox can be false if it couples incorrect concepts, definitions or understandings. For example, How can God, for whom nothing is impossible, create a stone that He can’t lift? If God can lift anything, then He can’t make anything that He can’t lift. On the other hand, if He can create such a stone, then at least one thing is impossible to Him, that is; the lifting of this stone. But this proposed paradox is a false one, because the meanings behind the question are mutually exclusive, and, additionally, we are talking about God. And it makes no logical sense to ask what will happen when an irresistible force meets an immovable object? And second, the God we’re talking about is a lot more than just an irresistible force.

Have you ever heard the term “axiom? before? An axiom, a-x-i-o-m, is a basic truth or fact that does not need to be proven, because it’s foundational. In math, it is axiomatic that, if you multiply any number by one, the product equals that same number. This is more useful than you may think, very helpful the sciences to convert and preserve units and values.

So, if one can build an argument on a foundation of axiomatic premises during a discussion, the logic of that side of a given debate is strengthened.

I doubt if you would think it a very profound to state that foundational truths have always been at the base of sound reasoning. Jesus certainly put forth this concept in His parable about building your house on sand. The idea is that a solid foundation, though initially perhaps more difficult to establish, chiseling out of the rocks as it were the base for your foundation, the end result is a house that will endure when those inevitable violent storms arrive...

In the last couple of days we've been looking at similarities among cultures and noting that most entertain myths and beliefs similar in many ways to a primordal paradise, a Garden of Eden.

Among the most intriguing ancient traditions to me is that reported of the Miautso tribes, who at one time occupied most of inland

China south of the Yangtze River. These tribes have been gradually driven into the mountains of the southwest by the better-armed and better-organized Chinese.

As explained by the translator, Edgar Truax, "The Miao traditions are very precise, as compared with those of many primitive peoples, because they are not only handed down in metrical form, but, also, they are in couplets, in which the same or similar meaning is expressed in different wording, so that the second sentence acts as a definition of the first, where it might otherwise not be clear. This is very much like one form of Hebrew poetry.

For your consideration:

Hesiod; “At first the immortals who dwell on Olympus created a golden race of mortal men, and they lived like gods, carefree in their hearts, shielded from pain and misery. Helpless old age did not exist, and with limbs of unsagging vigor they enjoyed the delights of feasts, out of evil's reach.?

And, in the jungles of ancient Meso-america, a similar account was preserved in the. Popoi Vuh; “And in this way they (the Creators and Makers) were filled with joy, because they had found a beautiful land, full of pleasures. There were foods of every kind.? But a problem surfaced. The gods found that the "created" came into a possession of knowledge and vision equaling that of the "creators", and this could not be tolerated for long. Holding council, they resolved to remove these powers from the realm of mankind. This divine dilemma is almost identical to the one described in Genesis 3:22.

Last several sessions we’ve been looking, in a bit of detail, at the events that have led to the secularization of our public schools. Though first coined, it seems, in 1984, the phrase neuro-theology was probably popularized in Laurence O McKinney’s 1994 book Neurotheology : Virtual Religion in the 21st Century, where he attempts to connect technology and New Age spirituality. The concept has brought the following questions right into the university classroom: Is the Brain Wired for God? Is There a Scientific Basis for Spirituality & Religious Belief? Does God Exist? Last time we introduced the beginnings of the process by which the dogma of evolutionism entered into, and, finally, saturated our public school curriculum. Irrespective of the outcome of the famous, though often inaccurately reported, Scopes trial of 1929, evolutionism continued to be generally quite controversial and not widely taught in public schools. Those class texts text books that did discuss it nevertheless often omitted it from their indices. But, as mentioned last time, after the National Science Foundation Act was promulgated in 1950, the National Science Foundation was formed, and this group was able to fund what was known as the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study in the late 1950's...jack
