After voicing his concerns about the growing popularity of creationism among biology teachers and school board presidents, Mr. Berra proceeds in his book to cite, as proof of evolution, homologies in vertebrates, “vestigial? organs and similarities in embryonic developments (pp 24 - 25), variation (for example finches on pp 28 -  29), rock strata fossils, radiometric dating, the archaeopteryx and the horse (pp 33 – 46), drug resistance in bacteria, the peppered moth, sickle cells and malaria (pp 47 – 62), the big bang, coacervate droplets, and primate relationships (pp 64 – 117).

But if free scientific discourse were to be tolerated, it would quickly be revealed to those who don’t already know it that, in fact, all of these discussions only are presenting examples, in all cases, of either variations within species and natural selection, or dreamt up, unsubstantiated scenarios, and certainly not the creation of anything new in a species or class.

In 1998, Tim Berra, Professor of Zoology, Ohio State University, put out an in-your-face book entitled Evolution and the Myth of Creationism.

This book displays a general attitude and aggressive approach to the evolution-creation debate that you can commonly see in similar books and articles produced by some of the leading evolutionists these days.

Like some of his peers, Mr. Berra can see clearly that there are a lot of people today that are questioning the assumptions and statements-of-fact being brought forth by some of today's evolutionary "mouthpieces?.

Over the last few days we've been presenting the laws of thermodynamics and how they align themselves strongly in support of Scripture and against evolutionism. It was previously mentioned that evolutionists claim that creationists misunderstand that the law defies evolution only in a closed system, and, due to the availability of the Sun"s energy, evolution of life on earth, by local increases in order, can occur.

But the late AW Wilder-Smith clarifies, in his book The Creation of Life, that this idea about the Sun providing energy for evolution is itself a misunderstanding of open and closed systems. In a presentation he picks up a stick off the ground, warmed by the hot Sun above, and rotting, and shows that the Sun, providing unorganized energy, heats up the stick, and so only serves to make the deterioration of the stick happen faster. The use of the Sun’s energy, which Smith calls teleonomy, can only be done by an intelligently designed plant. Smith, a brilliant scientist with three PhD’s in the biological field, clarifies that the spontaneous synthesis of life’s building blocks, and embedding of information within life, is made absolutely impossible by the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

We have been discussing thermodynamics and the fact that Scriptural statements about the creation of energy and matter, and the inevitable demise of all material things, is heavily supported by the four laws of thermodynamics. We left off last time with a little detail about the zeroth and first laws. Today and next time we will look a bit more closely at the Second and Third Laws.

The second law of thermodynamics builds upon the First law by stating that all energy, which according to the first law cannot be created or destroyed, experiences a universal process of change, and it is a directional change, but it is not an upward change.

We left off last time with the clear statements in Scripture that all things were, by God and only God, created, and though were originally enduring and highly organized, have, because of the phenomena of sin and disobedience, been hurled into a downward spiral of devolution and death.

These Biblical realities are heavily demonstrated by the laws of thermodynamics. Thermodynamics is one of those disciplines, heavily based in mathematics, that is supported by universally accepted, scientific laws. There are four such laws presented by thermodynamics. They are the Zeroth, First, Second and Third laws.

Julian Huxley, dubbed as Darwin’s bulldog, in his book "Evolution and Genetics?, presents evolution as that which “can be defined as a directional and essentially irreversible process occurring in time, which in its course gives rise to an increase of variety and an increasingly high level of organization in its products. Our present knowledge indeed forces us to the view that the whole of reality is evolution—a single process of self-transformation."

But despite such confident and unsupportable claims made by evolutionary apologists like Huxley, we at best only know what the accumulation of knowledge presents to be true. In science, we enunciate such accumulated knowledge in the form of laws, and the “meat and potatoes? of a given scientific law usually is associated with cause and effect relationships.

Last time we ended our discussion pondering how intelligent observers in the last century could miss such obvious facts as we’ve been discussing as they were developing theories about the origin of coal. It was proposed that, as is often is the case when discussing origins, that it may have to do with foundational beliefs, world views if you will, upon which any theory is built.

If you don’t believe, or worse, are vehemently opposed to the Biblical claim of a worldwide flood, then the idea of a violent, world-wide, sudden event occurring in marine waters creating coal beds is at best an idea that would not occur to you, and at worst is repulsive and perhaps a little frightening...Jack

This fourth of a five part, closer look at what most of us have been taught about coal and how it developed, continues to challenge the idea that coal developed in freshwater swamps over millions of years.

So far we’ve reviewed seven observable facts that demonstrate that coal contains marine plants and animals and so should not be theorized to have been generated from freshwater swamps; that coal beds are often impaled by tree trucks oriented in all directions and so should not be believed to have layered over long time periods; that the beds and the trees and roots within them often contain materials that are foreign to the areas where the coal beds are found. Something sudden and energetic, violent, not slow and calm, seems to be associated with coal beds. Also, we saw evidences that these beds are often too vast to be credible swamp floors, and that many coal beds found today are without soils beneath them, necessary to the swamp theory...Jack

We have been looking at the theories proposed for the origin of coal, and noting reasons for preferring the flood theory above the more commonly known swamp theory. The three reasons discussed last time; many plants found in coal are not swamp plants, trees found in coal beds sometimes contain energetically transported foreign material, and fossils of salt-water life is often found in coal, all seem to contradict the millions-of-years, slow layering, fresh-water swamp theory.

Now, a fourth observation supporting the flood theory: upright tree trunks penetrating tens of feet, perpendicular, diagonally positioned, or upside down, are sometimes found in and associated with coal beds, showing a short time period for coal forming before the tree could rot and fall. Because the tree is in growth position and shows no root regeneration, it probably was buried very quickly, certainly before it could decay...Jack

Last time we began to examine the two prevalent theories today used to explain the formation of coal on the Earth; the swamp theory and the flood theory, and how they fit into the Biblical record.

The swamp theory claims that, millions of years ago, much of our land was covered by freshwater swamps. In these swamps were leaves, stems, spores, free trunks, branches, plant roots, resins, charred wood from swamp fires, other organic material, and mineral (inorganic) matter were deposited within the swampy basins. This process continued for many years forming heavy, soggy layers and eventually a material called peat. Then dirt, sand and clay covered the peat and heat and pressure produced by these layers caused the peat to become rich carbon deposits. After millions of years, the story goes on to propose, these carbon deposits formed coal...Jack
